I really feel for you on this one - applying for jobs in this current economic climate is incredibly tough. Do you really want to do strategy? Is this an opportunity to use the time to retrain yourself into an area that gives you more joy.
I would also recommend assessing your current LinkedIn profile and using a free tool to analyse how effective it is at attracting Recruiters. Use this time to write LinkedIn post and become a top voice in strategy so that you can flex your expertise. I would also get a professional to look over your CV to make sure it is strong enough to stand out in this market. Ask yourself about your interview style are you a charmer or an examiner? And how can you use this style to interview? Are you practicing the STAR method and structuring your responses this way
Also consider it’s not you, it’s the market. There is always room for improvement of course, but don’t beat yourself up - there are so many out of work in our field due to all the layoffs and restructures. Is there any job you can do as a stopgap? When the market improves, as it always does, I’m sure you’ll get snapped up. Really it’s a mental game now, to really believe you’re good and your time will come.
I'm 9 months in. 3500+ apps. Probably 30 or so interviews. Serious interviews where it went 2nd round and to final about about 8-9. Made it to top 2 and 3 a couple times. Market is crazy right now even with 8 years experience for me and many others. You got PHD level candidates applying to entry level roles lol.
I 100% am in the same boat as you. Been struggling with rejections since the beginning of this year after being laid off. Not to mention the occasional recruiter reaching out only to ghost me a day later. I also get spells of depression and hopelessness just like you but the fact that you are living means that there is still hope.
If I am feeling down, I lose myself to music, talk to friends, go outside and walk, eat a good meal, anything to give me a sense of hope that this situation is temporary. We got this! I'll see you on the other side!

Are you reaching out to connections for referrals before you apply?

Have you let every person you know on earth that you’re looking, given them a resume, and a list of companies you’re interested in?
I'm right there with you dear and I have a2 yr old that is really depending on me to be able to take him to all of his doctors appts plus therapies every week. His dad isn't all that helpful at times and it's causing me real bad depression and I don't know what to do anymore, but to maybe start begging it on the streets.
Hustle 24/7 to find work. Mental health is going to be tested. I was out of a full time job for 14 months. Freelance and side gigs keep me afloat as well as savings. Try going from making $17k a month to $0 with a family of 4. Always be searching for prospects. Upskill in relatable roles to carve out hybrid roles and recognition. I’ve played many roles in advertising, venture capital, startups , and fundraising. Always be closing and consulting. Don’t expect people to know you’re worth, you gotta take it. I’ve side stepped from various swim lanes: creative to product to strategy to branding to marketing to deal scouting to helping startups raise ventures capital. I applied to marketing and brand strategist roles and found a hybrid role that called for a creative director / marketing strategist. I beat out over 250 for that role. What set me apart was my experience and multidisciplinary background, and an MBA probably helped. But I was able to convince them they needed someone like me, not who they posted in the job description cause they didn’t know what they were looking for. Long story short keep your head up. Also worked side gigs from Amazon to building firework sheds to event staff. Keep your head up and reinvent yourself and use your network. And remember we work in highly volatile careers… and yeah, career pivots should be considered. Hope this helps. 👋
