It's almost the same everywhere and worse if your superiors are the immature ones. Most of these people are too comfortable in their roles. Sometimes they aren't even aware of their immaturity until someone points it out to them, but even then they hardly change. Just have to deal with it and adapt.
Thankfully it's not my manager, I can see how that would be extremely discouraging
It's simply unacceptable to have to deal w/such immature (lazy) co-workers. I too work in NYC healthcare Tech. My immediate co-workers, mgr, professional, kind, all very hardworking in order to make our org a better place. I've learned how to navigate from working many decades in corp environments. It's not always easy, but ain't rocket science. One doesn't need to best best friends w/everyone, just do all we can to ensure we're all in this to work together.
BTW - It's a job people, it's the starting point, they wouldn't pay you if it were all fun and games.
Same way at my job, I said something to the staff, they went to my higher-ups and said I'm causing a hostile work environment..,....for pointing out the issue. So why say anything if your the one who's going to look bad.
That's exactly my point

There is a difference between being civil and having a good working relationship and being friends. You dont have to be friends with everyone. Just keep it professional with those you dont really get along with.
Is it true immaturity or are they trying to keep themselves sane in a tough role. You work in oncology where there is a lot of heartbreaking cases. Dark humor and goofing around might be a defense mechanism for the staff. I don't know your situation but thought I would throw this out there
I think it's true immaturity... I'm talking about spending more time focusing on socializing with each other and on their phones, always about nothing of any substance, and not taking the work seriously which especially where I work, they should be. I'm fine with people chatting during downtime but they never have their work finished so I'm just floored.
