I’ve been supporting various local and federal government organizations since completing undergrad four years ago. The slow periods have been long and grueling. With remote work, I appreciate being able to clean, read, and workout, but I’m feeling burnt out from having too little to do and my boss has postponed my PMP course request for about six months. For those in similarly slow moving roles - how do you stay motivated without spending extra cash on courses?

I agree with C1. You won’t be financially happy or wealthy in a few decades just by working this job and earning 8-15% annual return on your savings and 401k. Money doesn’t buy happiness but it sure makes life easier

I enjoy reading up on things, if that’s what you consider independent study? It’s mainly when I talk to family and friends who are genuinely busy and enjoy their work that I start to feel like having this little work to do is going to hurt my career.

How do you know when it’s best to stay in your position?

I’m tired of pivoting. I feel like my job has growth potential and I like my company. Also it seems like my company places a lot of emphasis on experience and I can only get that with time.

On the other hand I work on a small team and there is definitely room for improvement. I think the issue is the size of the team? Like, if there were 2-3 more people it wouldn’t be too bad.

I’m conflicted. Thoughts?

I have been looking at the curriculums for Harvard Business School's Master of Business Administration and Harvard Extension School's ALM in Management. They both have the same requirements (generally speaking) including a capstone course that serves as a field immersion course with the Master's in Management, which is fairly new. If I am not able to gain admission to Harvard Business School, but wanted a similar educational experience to become a consultant, should I attend Harvard Extension?

I don't want another break from work, I want to keep doing things (eg not so drained I want to take months off) but this seems like burnout and I don't know what to do.

Been having trouble moving on since girlfriend ended relationship 3 weeks ago after 2+ years of dating. Before ending it she came over 3 weeks prior to basically give me a chance to work things out and we had a good discussion but then I went back into our routine and didn’t really fight for it or have serious follow up convos that we needed. Now I just have so many regrets that I let her go. I know we still love each other and left on “good” terms but can’t forgive myself for my lack of action.

This is more of a rant than anything but advice is welcome. I’m so fed up with my manager micromanaging everything. We miss client deadlines frequently because deliverables are backlogged under their review, they make comments on things they weren’t in client discussions about, and won’t listen when told client wanted it X way. I’m at a loss for what to say to them because I’ve tried repeatedly to fix this to no avail.
