I’ve seen indie filmmakers pour their souls (and savings) into short films, only for them to disappear after a couple of screenings. I’ve been on projects where the crew worked for free, hoping the festival circuit would open doors, but most of the time, nothing came of it except debt and disappointment. Do festivals actually help launch careers anymore, or are they just expensive ego trips dressed up as opportunity?

I once asked a colleague at a radio company how much he's paid monthly, and he outright refused to tell me. In fact, he found it very odd that I asked. I later learned that he was making double my salary. I know it's not an employee's job to fix pay inequity by sharing their salary figures, but I'm still of the opinion that it helps uncover pay gaps.
