The first time I saw layoffs I was genuinely sick about it but now it feels like it’s just business, albeit often a result of bad decisions and lack of foresight or long term thinking by leadership.
I haven't seen a huge number of layoffs, but enough to make me inured to them. I grew up thinking they were disastrous, but now it seems like it's just part of the business plan for a lot of outfits. Someone decides costs needs to be cut, and someone swings the scythe. I will say I'm worried about what this year could bring. It just feels like all the chaos and uncertainty will hit a lot of people. I already know of a former colleague who lost his job, he's in the private sector but his company did a lot of government contracts which are now canceled.

It always feels like the year of a presidential election brings a lot of uncertainty, but honestly feels like this year will be even worse from that standpoint. I’m nervously watching for what is unfolding.
I went from Tech (non-technical role) to Consulting (2022 - Present) and have seen multiple rounds of layoffs. I also feel quite desensitized to it and I’m only about three years out of college.

I feel like anyone who has graduated since the start of pandemic almost knows this as a new normal.
I am jaded about it, but it would be detrimental to go through so many and have to have that devastated response each time. It’s not good and it is awful to have happened to someone you work with or yourself. However, it is just a matter of business keeps on going and you get back on the horse so to speak.

Exactly! And frankly when layoffs happen there’s so much slack to pick up the survivors don’t have time to dwell on it too much.
You are definitely not the only one because I was just thinking about this the other day. it sucks and I do feel for everyone who gets impacted but I kind of just shrug and move on these days.

I’m kind of hard on myself about it. Like am I an emotionless robot? But I do feel for them.

I will say at my current company, the severance package is very generous and those laid off still receive their bonus. It still sucks, but knowing they get several months of pay and benefits makes it sting a little less.
I feel that way too. I think it's a byproduct of the up or out environment to some degree
That’s a huge part of it. Layoffs essentially become business as usual.
