Your experience is valuable. I would begin looking elsewhere as they sound clear about not allowing you to transition. I was a paralegal, then law school and now am at a big firm. Very possible transition, just seems like it should be elsewhere for you.
Start looking. Its a transition that’s been done before. If they aren’t willing to consider it they don’t value you there. Find somewhere that does.
It’s in your interest that they don’t promote you. The implication is that many people there will never see you as a “real” attorney, because they knew you came in as a paralegal.
I think it’s an old school mentality, but I have definitely heard about this from older (female) partners who made that transition when this good ol boys network was even more so back in the day.
It’s a boomer tradition thing. They don’t see “the help” as real people so it’d be preposterous and a bad look for them to ever bring one of “the help” up to the “good ole boys” club.
Boomer brain strikes again. 🙄

Yeah unfortunately it seems like you and the firm had different thoughts about a transition. Was this discussed prior to you accepting the position or was it something that you were hoping could happen ? It’s rare for the paralegal to associate transition as opposed to law clerks/post bar clerks who are waiting for credentials to be completed.
Given that the odds of this transition where slim to none from the outset don’t think about it as a waste of time, it sounds like you were given a lot of extremely valuable learning experiences that will undoubtedly benefit you in the future. If anything it’s a great experience in the importance of confirming that your expectations for future development align with that of your employer.
I really love the firm and was under the impression this entire time that they shared in my long-term goal. First, I don’t understand the “conflict” it would create, as I think hiring me in a Paralegal role in the first place would have been the largest “conflict.” I feel very defeated now knowing that all of my hard work there has been a waste. I’ve gone above and beyond, pulled weekends and all-nighters to complete attorney-level tasks (motion drafting, legal research, brief writing) only to be told that I have to start a new job search even though I’ve done nothing wrong. Hoping at least for some assistance in placement. Anyone have any advice?
Firms pretty much never promote paralegals into associates.
Not necessarily true. Be strong and look forward to moving into the next chapter!
