Would just say that in this climate, unless the research position is for a client I wouldn’t push it too far. Internal roles (cost centers) are the first to tighten the purse strings in this environment and usually the first to get let go as well. So a new employee with a high salary is prime for cuts

Not necessarily… look at the layoffs that are happening. All high value tech. If you’re doing internal support that is an investment to the firm they’re likely to minimize their investment in recessions
You can. It is hard to override pay band for a specific role and it may require executive approval of some kind. Which is always tough
So , be prepared to take the offer if you don’t get your preferred pay (if you really like the role). They may also come back and say that they would target to adjust in next cycle.
Thanks for the input, def don't want to opush it, but a sign on bonus at least, it just seems a bit meager. Timing just sucks these days
Update: Emailed and got a meeting, unfortunately had lower numbers for bonus percentage so that was slightly higher so not a paycut but only 2k more TC than current job. Froze and didn't ask for more. Basically said "oh fine". Going to accept now but not happy about it
