If it’s a hard/fast rule that everyone must stay til 6pm, that alone would be a red flag. As long as you’re getting the work done, what does it matter?
Sounds like you may need to insist on some formalization for your flexibility. Unless your interviews will be your direct managers - and you trust that they will continue to embrace the flexibility when they’re not trying to convince you to work there - I would definitely try to negotiate early leave times and WFH as part of your package if at all possible.
Definitely get an answer. I got all the way to an offer, mentioning my kids and balance etc, but when I asked about 5pm they completely balked
That’s ridiculous, and a flaming red flag.
The only creative agency I’ve heard of with nonnegotiable hours is the Richards Group. Every employee must literally punch in at 8:29AM. But shit’s backwards in Texas. Where is this place?
Agree with BBDO1: are office hours even a thing at agencies? Get there at a respectable time, leave when you need to - as long as the work gets done and you are available for your team when truly necessary who cares when you clock in/out.
Do I assume that they nodded but then told recruiter 6pm because it’s a hard and fast rule or can I hope to get some flexibility to leave closer to 5 a few days a week? I asked recruiter to ask, but if the answer is no then it’s a really hard choice between dinner with kids or job I think I’d really love 😢
Similar situation where I am and I negotiated a 4pm leave with an 8am start per the contract piece, but I’m under the mindset of show up, get shit done well and on time, and leave.
