Just got feedback that I'm "too quiet" in meetings. But sometimes I feel like I'm just stating the obvious. How do you find the balance between speaking up and not wasting everyone's time?

something that may be obvious to you may not be to others. occasionally asking questions that might get a quick answer isn’t bothering anyone. things like “did you consider the edge case when __ happens?” or asking for clarification on something ambiguously phrased.

you can also offer to contribute to note taking in meetings if you prefer to listen. it proves that you are paying attention and also contributes to documentation everyone can benefit from.

There is a big push for inclusion now. Which is NOT a bad thing. Part of that is making sure people feel comfortable speaking in meetings.

But, in the rush, I think they forget that some people prefer not to speak.

I have known people who never talk in meetings, so when they do, it's worth listening.

A partner I work for keeps asking for ETA's on assignments I have already submitted to the senior associate on the deal for review. Does it sound like I'm throwing the senior associate under the bus if I say I have already submitted to senior associate and am waiting for feedback? I feel like the partner will get upset at me even more if my answer sounds like I haven't submitted the assignment to the senior associate yet.

Has anyone had a Manager that does not work well with your ADHD? Im going through this right now and the way they communicate doesn’t match what I need. If I ask questions, they huff and puff. But then get upset if something is done and it doesn’t meet their exact expectations. It’s sucks that I don’t have enough interest to continuously focus on the projects, but now I have even less motivation because I dread dealing with my manager.

Have you ever been told off by an older attorney of color? We have one Black partner at our firm and in conversation with him this morning he told me I should work on sounding and looking "more professional" and not let my "tone" or "bad attitude" get in the way. I don't think I've ever had a bad attitude at work, and whatever "tone" I'm speaking in it's my normal one. As a Black woman I just feel super weird about it and kind of sad.

How did you give notice you were lateraling to people you like? Particularly if you haven't been there that long?

I'm lateraling to another firm because frankly I think the management of this one is terrible, but the people (and individual partners) I actually work with are awesome. I've only been here for about 18 months, so I imagine that short time frame will make it extra awkward 😬
