Just joined the firm 3 weeks ago as an associate. I find myself being awkward on calls, having periods of silences, and finishing abruptly. Any recommendations on how to make the call run fluidly?

I had similar challenges early on as well:

1. Set clear objectives at the beginning of the call
2. Summarize key takeaways and next steps at the end of the call
3. Prepare: Write out 2-3 questions or thoughts before each call so you go in with something to say
4. Don’t be too hard on yourself. You are most likely more critical of yourself than others, so something that seems awkward to you may not even be noticed

Thank you so much for your reply! I really appreciate it. Will definitely use these tips on my next call

M1 nailed it.
I often prepare and write key pointers in a notepad that includes how to start and end the meeting , and what key topics I should touch in the middle.
It helps me because, I am not only introvert but also not a native English speaker.

Pay attention to how other people do it and learn from example

I’m sober curious. I’m also about to help a new non-alcoholic spirit company with their launch.
I have a question for people in recovery. If a brand were to contend that sobriety is a spectrum, or allow for that to a least be part of the conversation, how does that make you feel? Are other brands doing a good job of being inclusive of people who are truly sober?
(I get that NA drinks / spirits can be triggering for people in recovery)
Thank you.

I’ve noticed that HR, when explaining why a candidate didn’t get the job, tend to lean on “You’re great, but we had candidates with more experience in [skill relevant to the job].” I do believe this is true in some cases, but it can’t possibly be for all of them.

HR folks — what feedback have you obscured by offering that line instead?
