I’m in a HCOL as a first year tax manager who was early promoted. My raise was 1.5% putting me in the mid-high 80s and range.
My OTMP said he doesn’t expect anything beyond 1-3% raises and 1-3% AIP bonus in 2021 and then 2022 will return to normal... so realistically I’m not going to make over $100K in a HCOL until I’m a M3... Last year, new M1s were between 100 to 110k in base...
In short - LEAVE. Public accounting has a compensation problem they need to figure out.
If you take the leap and can make it work/figure it out once you get there as a manager it will probably be worth it in the long run. $80k as a first year senior sounds like you’re in a HCOL office so you might even get more than $30k who knows
Gotcha, thanks!
I would go for it if you had that type of opportunity. It seems like a good way of being able to quickly get yourself to manager. This is coming from someone on the audit side, but I don't feel like you learn significantly more as a Senior 2 or a Senior 3. I think the biggest learning curves are the promotion years (Associate -> Senior, Senior -> Manager, etc.).

You can only ever do what’s best for yourself. The firm does what’s best for the firm.
I’m am a believer in applying for whatever you see, whenever you see it. Worst case scenario is you go through all the hoops, they offer it to you, and you say no.
Seriously. That’s the worst case scenario. Everything before that, every single outcome - only costs you time. I can apply and interview and research other companies and look for more jobs — in less time than I spend scrolling Instagram and fishbowl. It doesn’t cost you anything to tell recruiters you’re interested. And recruiters make it easier too. They do a lot of the hemming-and-hawing back and forth for scheduling.

I applied for five jobs this week. I’m mostly happy in my current firm. But the grass is always greener.
Thanks all for your advice. There’s just so much out there and it’s all so confusing. I need someone to just tell me what to do lol. I bet there would be a market for this, to hire an “agent” of sorts. It wouldn’t be as individualized as a sports agent, but having an unbiased advocate who knows the market would be such a great thing. At the end of the day you can’t really trust recruiters bc they only get paid if you get a new job. Woah I may be onto something here
Go with your gut feeling. You could always boomerang back to Big4 if you really wanted to.
I believe at CR first year managers start at 100k in HCOL in tax. So they may give you more than that to poach you even quicker.
