Serious billing question - if during the course of the day, you first receive an email from Client A at say 11:10am and you read it, you then respond to it at 12:20pm. You get another email at 2pm from Client A and respond immediately. The next email comes in at 4pm, you read it and respond only at 4:30pm. None of the email responses take more than 3-5mins. You are working on matters for other clients at all other times during the day. How much are you billing for Client A?

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? For reference, the firm has a 1900 billable hour requirement and the partner said I would have “no problem” fulfilling that based on the work they have.

I’ve worked at the same firm for almost 5 years. I’ve received an end of year bonus of varying sizes- my first year, my paycheck was doubled. The last 3 years, I’ve received 25k-30k bonuses. This year I received a bonus in April (20k) and one in July (15k) but I still expected an end of year bonus. I didn’t get it even though this has been my most profitable year yet. Should I just assume those earlier bonuses were INSTEAD of an end of year bonus or should I ask my boss?
