Welcome to life. You don’t always get a fair shake. Keep moving and learning and growing
OP, good to hear that. A lot of folks in my firm who was put on PIP or removed for whatever ridiculous reasons are doing much better. Congrats.
Sometimes it’s just luck of working for the right people and on the right projects. I was an average performer at KPMG and got all the wrong projects ands working with the wrong people. Moved to EY, catched a good flow and a high performer with early promotions ever since. Did I just change overnight? Not at all. Its sometimes just the luck of catching the right wave. Long story short; I feel you and don’t look back at it with regret or a feeling of failure. Just not the right match, which is not your fault at all.
I left my previous company due to same reasons. I also had Sr leaders who would go out of their way to undermine and embarrass me openly.
I started looking for a new job - what’s funny is I was most influential and had my best year while I was looking for another job. Hindsight it was because i didn’t give AF what they were saying and charged forward like a boss (knowing if I got fired I had something in my back pocket).
I left 1 year ago, and have already been promoted at my new firm. 💪 all of my friends from my old company commented on my promotion. Previous leadership is dead silent.🖕
Tell us more about your exit and how you managed to land the role, Op..INSPIRE US!
Were you at D?
What kind of role are you currently in? Tpm, product, bizops etc? What did you do at D, which group?
Sometimes the universe throws us what seems like a loss, but is truly a win. Run with it.

“Low performance” in the B4 world often means that some folks think more independently than the typical insecure overachiever.
Quite frankly, it sounds like you grew out of D and left your former manager in the dust financially and otherwise - cheers, my friend!
Congrats op! I have a similar experience. When i was an intern, my manager recommended that i dont pursue consulting on my last day of internship. Well it was my first internship and ofc i wasnt performing well. But he gave me bs reasons like i cant think top down or structured thinking process. Guess what now i am a high performer and cant wait to meet him one day
I’ve been having some similar issues with my leadership (no PIP though) and it has really pushed me to look to leave. Really love your story and hope I can make a similar move soon too. No BS, It’s inspiring to know the move is possible and I’m glad it worked out for you…also hope I’m right behind you.

Similar story, about 8 months earlier.
Big 4 is super political….and in retrospect low impact. I’m frankly embarrassed by how much “operating model” work I did which never changed how product or IT teams work day to day.
Much happier with the work, my clients, my pay, and my overall treatment in tech
Gz!! What kind of consulting did you do?

I don’t understand why you’re looking back. You made it out & what you landed wasn’t a desperation role by any stretch! I believe everything happens for a reason!!! Kudos on the FAANG role 🥂👏🏽🥳 Leaving B4 is so gratifying!
Yep in first year was a tier 2, then 4, then 2, then exited. 4 because of a toxic relationship with my then assigned TL. Had different TL's for nearly each year and you can see the difference. I operated the same over 4 years. I was an experienced hire joining with 17yoe.
Sometimes these experiences are for the better to help you get out of the shit env you're in to something better.

Similar situation when I was at a prior Big4.
Manager knew nothing and was great at throwing others under the bus with no feedback. I salvaged that project against all odds and was still blames for it. Manager Tried to get me on a PIP but my Leader Partner was like “I know X. X is much better than you make it sound”. Only reason I didn’t get fired during Covid was that I knew that Partner from a prior project- and most people aren’t that lucky.
I’m now at a T2, working better hours and making much more money than that Manager, who 2 years later, is still a Manager and had to transfer Groups because their prior one wouldn’t support their promotion.
Had the same experience, 15 glorious years in industry performance/recognition wise… about 18 very tough years at Deloitte where I felt I was growing/contributing but performance process did NOT recognize progress I was making, am now rocking it again at new gig
Too many non performance factors can influence performance process at Deloitte
What is PIP?

Probably Impossible Predicament
How much are you making at FAANG?
I had a similar experience

“Politics” and managing up, aka kissing ass, is unfortunately part of the process and something one needs to learn to survive and thrive.
It shouldn’t be what is required to survive and thrive. Hopefully it will be an antiquated mindset when the newer generations take over.
Shit happens. You learn and move on. You’re not differently-challenged right?
