OP, I think "doing your own thing" for a month will get you into a big utilization hole that is tough to get out of. You should be able to handle training and BD at the same time as project work any ways, which is the expectation at D. I wouldn't linger on the bench too long if an opportunity present itself.
Seems like the bench is pretty big based on the available practitioner reports I see.
There's s&o in federal?
We're still hiring like mad it looks like
So must be some availability, especially in national security
Not sure what it's like over there but the bench can rack up during late spring and summer but it's all good unless you can't get staffed in November. Government awards pour in at September
Do you all feel like there's not insane pressure to be staffed immediately? I don't care about utilization and kinda wanna do my own thing (bd, training, etc) for a month...
What D1 said. If you can get staffed with a project that's a decent fit, it's going to be a hard case to make that you just wanted to do training and BD or something for personal development...
gotcha, thank you all!
OP, what level are you? I think that also factors into how picky you can be. Is there a reason you don't have something lined up already you using your network since it sounds like you were on LOA?
SC, been with the firm 3 years, never on the bench. I've always been on projects I didn't want to be on so I thought it would be worthwhile to take some time on the bench to find a project I actually wanted to do.
(i was hired into a project, seriously never been on the bench :)
