Lady SAs and Managers, PwC FS comp thread. Gents feel free to comment. I want to check if ladies are achieving parity.

I think it's a numbers game. I know some outstanding women in the firm. They have no problem getting promoted and will do well no matter the partner/client they interact with. The fact is though, that there are much larger numbers of males in the business world. So probability would say more males will get promoted and more males will be in executive roles. That is not to discount the gender pay gap, because it does exist. But I think there are far more factors in play than just "men get paid better". Factor in that men are stereotypically known to be better negotiators (don't take the first offer), and that a much larger number of women leave the workforce to raise children then men, contributing to a lower level of women in leadership positions. Lots of other factors too. There's a great freakonomics podcast on this topic.

We can't forget that it's sometimes a relationship factor. Men just feel more comfortable with men in general (obviously there are exceptions), and women probably with women. Again, obviously exceptions exist if not there wouldn't be any female partners (past the fact that sometimes they're trying to make sure there's diversity). In my opinion, I've seen way more capable women than men on the staff and manager level, but they might be on the losing end in a conversation of 50 year old partners talking about whiskey and football (yes, there are many women who follow and love both), but in general more men have the tendency to be able to fit into those buckets.

Cohort system - we're all the same now. Have you not been paying attention?

like

😳 and how is this post asking for ladies' current comp level going to tell you that?

like

Yea but we're all the same! SA1 for a man and SA1 for a woman are the exact same.

Ok: so we need a business school class for guys on rooting out unconscious bias. The trouble is older guys went to school when colleges were less diverse. They don't know how to integrate well with minorities and women.

like

P1 I know there is a cohort system. But I don't think that ladies are achieving promotions at the same rate. Hence there is still disparity in pay.

like

Also M1 DC Advisory.. Yup 94.5k

The ladies do move up the ranks OP. Have a good year and you will probably get promoted. Make sure your coach, RP, and HR know you want to be promoted. I'm working on a project now with a freshly promote manager and director, both women. Both very good. If you're good, you move up, if you're not, you don't. Shouldn't be that hard to comprehend.

like

P8 - you basically just described what op was asking if existed. Same goes for race. White guys may connect better with white guys. Again, it can be navigated but it takes more work on the part of the underrepresented.

like

Well yea p2, but the thread question was about pay and there is no discrimination based on that. No one at the firm will offer a female SA1 90k in NYC just because she's female, and a male higher than that for being male. Partnership becomes hazy. Same for some promotions at the higher level. And it's not because gender biases are necessarily at play. It's about the fundamentals of relationships - who do I like better and who do I connect with better, given all else equal.

You're SA? What location?

Note that I asked gents to comment. 🤓

Parity still a valid question unless they are just moving people through cohorts based on tenure (which shouldn't be the case).

The firm just moved to a cohort system to even the playing field when it comes to base comp. Kick ass and tell your RP you wanna be promoted. If you do a good enough job, you will be.

I'll go. Lady Sa3, $125k. NY.

Man sa1 99 NYC. And you are over the top for SAs in NYC, so if you don't get promoted this year, you will get little to no raise or be laid off. So kill it this year OP.

Sa2, $105k, SF

What separates sa1 vs sa3 besides someone subjective opinion? I feel comfortable navigating the game but not naive enough to think the system is transparent.

Newly promoted experienced hire SC making $113k, 10 YOE (switched industries). Got an offer from TCS in an Advisory practice (not the tech sweatshop stuff that I keep seeing people mention). Base salary is $190k and in TCS equivalent of a M role. Downside to taking the salary hike and boomeranging back to D in ~2 years? FYI - I have 2 kids, so that kind of pay raise is kind of a big deal.

Anybody work at Amazon? Are their offers negotiable? My husband got an offer for a senior position in the VA office paying $120k plus $20k bonus plus 13 shares of stock that vest over 4 years. My husband has ~6 years of experience (2 yrs midsize PA plus various industry roles) so the senior title is low but have heard you have to take a step down in title to work at Fortune 25 companies. Been getting approached by multiple recruiters for boutique consulting firms, and salary expectations never seem to align (mine are too high). I’m an experienced A in S& up for promotion fairly soon, which is why I benchmarked my salary expectation to SA level (140k base - even gave a slight discount there). More details: I’m happy where I am, with no great desire to move. Should I generally be setting lower expectations? What would your considerations be?

I curtsied dramatically & smiled. Unconscious race/gender bias? How would you respond?
