Is it diversity when the minority becomes the majority? 🤔

The less white people the better? What the hell is wrong with you PWC1. MAGA

Most of the time, white males are the majority on teams. Am I wrong? White males on this thread, please correct me if I’m wrong...

So it is certainly novel to see the tables flipped around. It’s diversity of team composition...

There’s probably 1 majority minority team for every 9 majority white male teams....so yeah, let OP celebrate the rare occurrence of diversity...

This thread proving again that white people can’t stand it when something isn’t about them (for once)

Now to get rid of that last white guy...OP if that’s you, I think you should roll off for the sake of the project. #progress

I was referring more to the females vs males thing tbh

It is great to read about diverse teams! Now we need to make sure that same diversity continues up the ranks of the company instead of drastically decreasing at the manager/Sr. Manager levels.

like

@A3, literally NO ONE is talking about emasculating white men. It’s about availability of opportunities for NON white men. Think about someone other then yourself. This isn’t a zero sum game you selfish prick

First of all, what teams are these?! I’ve consistently been the only Hispanic on my team. I’m a woman also. But for the most part there’s a good amount of women on my teams so I’m happy about that. ☝️

As for people who say that “it does not matter what creed, color, ethnicity, background as long as they get their work done" is bullshit. Similar backgrounds breed biases that are only known with the exposure to others. If we didn’t get something novel out of traveling to other countries then why would we go in the first place. Diversity is key. 🎤 drop.

I don’t know what’s more ridiculous - the fact that you take the time out of, what should be, a busy day to tabulate this or the need to pass this along as some sort of positive reflection of A.

like

No, the accepted definition of racism in the field of sociology (you know, the people who dedicate their lives to studying this stuff) is prejudice and power. What you’re calling racism is actually called prejudice. Minorities can be prejudiced against white people, but they can’t be racist because they don’t have the institutional power to make their lives miserable as a result of that prejudice. White people as a group do have that power (Police killings, loan discrimination, or more recently, the Starbucks incident). Fishbowl proving yet again that many self-proclaimed “smart” professionals are actually just overpaid blowhard with intellectual myopia.

likefunny

Ok so takeaways form this: 1.) negative generalizations about white people aren't racist. They're just prejudiced.
2.) It's ok to be prejudiced against white people
3.) Using dictionary definitions for words isn't enough. You need to check with sociologists. Otherwise you're just ignorant.

I've known what institutional racism is for a long time. But I personally don't limit the definition of racism to that.

like

K2... Give it a rest bro. You're making yourself look bad.

like

A5 and C5 thank you for telling me what you learned in college. I learned what institutional racism is too. C5 said "This proves white people can't stand it when something isn't about them". Which I said is a racist comment. Because it is. And it kills civil discourse. It is (part of) the reason Trump, the most racist president of the 20th and 21st centuries, is in power.

But I digress, just because I say a statement is be racist doesn't mean I think that's the only thing encompassing racism.

So, you insist it's a prejudiced statement, not racist. My definition of prejudice is pre judging someone based on some factor beyond their control. Ie. "This guy is black he might not pay his bill at the diner. I better charge him up front". "This person is Muslim. better give them an extra pat down." Prejudice is not limited to race.

like

Three reasons, one because people like the ones in this thread are actively trying to change the definitions of racisms so only institutional and systemic racism qualifies which is ridiculous - this is why they're not taken seriously. Two you're not helping and only pushing people away, as political science researchers have shown, people will object to being racist - you will experience blowback. Three, you're still reducing people down to averages as everyone's situations are unique. You may experience one form of injustice, but others experience other forms. Not all minority experiences are the same and not all white experiences are the same. People are still individuals and you're painting blame on some nebulous group while trying to stroke your own sense of self-righteousness.

likehelpful

It seems like men were under represented in the first team and “white” individuals were under represented in the next. Shouldn’t “diversity” be representative?

likeupliftingsmart

C5 aren't they just the worst!?

likefunny

@K2, C5 is right. Literally anyone whose taken a U.S. minority class would know that racism covers more than just overtly racist acts like hate crimes or the KKK. It’s about the power dynamic of an institutionalized system that disenfranchises people of color because white people control a majority of the power, resources, money, etc

likehelpful

Social researchers and activists who use the 'Racism = Prejudice + Power' definition, often cited in the sociological literature, generally strive for racial equality by highlighting the need to equalise differences in social power among racial groups. However, this definition can be taken to extreme when the role of social power is given disproportionate weight over the role of prejudice, such as assertions that racism is synonymous with White supremacy. Racism is not reducible to White supremacy as the stereotypes that underlie racism are subject to change with new information that either broadens, challenges, or disconfirms the previously held prejudicial stereotype. Racism is seen, in part, as a choice.

Indeed, it is crucial to create a space for the language of choice and personal responsibility in the discourse on racism because this kind of language is empowering and therefore seen as an effective tool for reducing racism. By properly acknowledging the role of ‘prejudice’ in racism, and not exclusively focusing on the element of ‘power’, individuals can be better empowered to exercise their own personal power and choice to be vigilant on their racial prejudices, and all racial groups can be better empowered to take responsibility for protecting each of our human right to racial equality.

Hey all, I’ve recently joined EY consulting from another Big 4 and have noticed there’s no discipline (at least in my team) around codes and charging time. People either charge a standard 7 hrs or some will charge time spent on internal activities to their client code.

I was told that “the last person to charge their actual hours worked was promptly booted off the project”.
Just wondering:
1) Is this a general cultural point accross all Consulting teams? Will challengin this get me in trouble?

Lots of right wing hysteria about liberals trying to engineer equality of outcome to correct sexual/racial inequities (in higher ed, for example). Been for a company for over 2years. The executive team is very much a boy's club. There are a few women in management roles but zero ethnicity diversity there. I raised my concern to HR in feb. And they are just now deciding to do something about it. They want me (white female) to put together a diversity committee. Any suggestions on how to go about it? How to attract volunteers to the committee? I want to make sure I get the right people involved in this, to push for changes.
