Can you get any data about associate comp at comparable firms? That might help you get a sense of if you’re at market. Another factor is your performance. How do you compare to the “average” associates at your firm? If you’re above average, maybe you should get an above average raise.
Finally, bear in mind the firm’s financial health. Even if they love you, do they have money to pay you more? Lots of firms are doing layoffs.
Good luck!
I love salary negotiations. My advice is to research as much as possible the comparable salaries in your area. And always tie your request to specific numbers related to your performance. You want a 6% raise because you accomplished xyz last yr or brought in xyz in settlements.
Also, increase your ask by a small amount to give room to negotiate. Im not saying go from 4% to 10%.....more like 10k to 13k. Small.
Consider intangibles that you could swap out instead of a specific dollar anount. This was easier in my career in corporate America before the law. Intangibles are things like working remotely more days a week, flex you schedule so you come in later, or receiving more pto. I know we lawyers dont really get pto. ..so that option doesn't work. But think of other intangibles you can use as bargaining chips.
Check your ego at the door. Whether they can or will give you a bigger raise is a reflection of them, not of what you deserve. Your worth is not determined by them. If they can't provide what you are looking for don't take it personally. Instead, look for new opportunities.
You got this!! Good luck!!!
Was just in this position. Asked for a raise to 1/3 of my billables. They gave me a 1/3 of my collections. I think that’s a pretty concrete basis for a raise.
Gah! Haha the one time I wish did billable hours. Maybe a percentage of the fee of the cases that I helped settle that year but didn’t bring in....
Are you at a really small firm? I’m also a third year in Houston and your salary seems really low.
Im in Houston as well 3rd year. Your salary is low. Send me a DM I know a few places hiring for PI (:
My salary is for sure low. It’s been the starting salary at the firm for over 20 years....they never adjusted it. But I didn’t negotiate at that time so here we are.
