Both are pretty bad, so I wouldn’t put too much thought into it.
Maybe just consider which OneWorld vs Star Alliance partners have the most nonstops from LAX to international destinations you’re interested in traveling to, and pick the corresponding domestic airline.
I think American makes more sense bc you can fly into LGA or JFK and avoid Newark. Even if you’re expensing rides to NYC I’d imagine it’s faster from LGA or JFK.
For Chicago I’d say it’s one in the same. The United terminal at Ohare is a little nicer and offers more options than AA but they are the same airport.
Whichever has most flights into LGA
Factor in your credit card points strategy to maximize your loyalty benefits. As an example, if you go united, you could use chase ultimate rewards as a transfer partner to help book miles tickets.
I had a somewhat similar decision (based in NY, fly to London + west coast + occasional Asia trip).
I went with American vs Delta/JetBlue/United because of the BA alliance/flight frequency to London, and use my Chase points to transfer to BA avios or other partners for “sweet spot” redemptions.
I may consider Alaska’s program next year but need to do more research.
How often do you fly internationally? I’d say United if you regularly travel abroad.
Based in LA as well; travel to NY and Chicago with some frequency although not crazy amounts where butt in seat miles gets me status. Ended up with American + Hyatt combo since it’s easiest to get status with American and between AA, B6 and AS, you have the most options domestically out of LAX
American. Then you get the benefit of the JetBlue and Alaska partnerships as well.
