No cleaning fee is $2000 lol
Definitely ask for an invoice to see if the cleaning justifies the fee.
My GF sister just dealt with the same in midtown. Folks can scream and holler about this, but Venezuelan land lords are the worse.
How did it go for her? Did she get her money back?
Looking for a new apartment recently, I was checking the comments on Google Maps. Most negative reviews are about this problem. They usually charge for a new painting or replacement for something.
Are you close with any lawyers? I had a lawyer friend sign a threatening letter and got my money back. Small claims court would’ve been the next step
No I am not. I should ask around how much it would cost for them to sign a letter. Thank you!
Also, has anyone successfully negotiated with landlords in situations like this? I'm open to hearing their side, but $2000 for cleaning an already clean apartment seems ridiculous.
Your landlord is just a douche. It’s in the terms of your lease so I would ask them to be reasonable but if they are holding you’ll have to go to court and even then it’s not guaranteed. A lot of landlords expect it to be returned to exactly the same standard so they have minimal effort in having it turned around. You should have / made sure that you have a reasonable wear and tear clause for things like marks in the wall but also that would be completely open to interpretation.
FWIW im a landlord and have this over and back with every renter.
Thank you so much for sharing. Sigh, I don’t even have a single nail on the wall. We’ve only lived there for one year, and they didn’t provide any receipts or invoices.
In Ohio you mail them a letter that says mail my full security deposit to this address. They have 30 days to send it. If they don’t you can take them to court on their dime. Then they have to pay you double! Tenets have rights.
