Mid-level Commercial litigator working towards an LLM (at a top program). At a good firm but not one known for tax. If I decide to interview elsewhere will firms be open to me if I express willingness to take a significant class year cut to transition to transactional tax? Not sure I want to work in controversy.

That will likely be part of the deal if you lateral. I am sure firms will hear you out as long as you express an interesting in switching practice groups. I am not sure if you should come out and say that you are willing to take a class year cut unprompted though. The biggest things to show are that you get tax, your LLM grades are good, you have positive references, and you know how to bill hours. If you go transactional, emphasize how your litigation experience will help you as a planner and you have already worked in a firm atmosphere. If you end up leaning controversy then lean into your litigation experience.

Thanks!

What could be the reasons? What should I do now?

Thanks in advance!!

Living in Van. Previously lived in Toronto. Obviously rent prices are high as is cost of living. Generally go out and spend more often living in a city. Boyfriend and I on good salary but not saving much due to the above. Before we move home to our own country, we’d love to spend a year close to Vancouver where rent is cheaper, temptation is less, to save. A commute to Vancouver 1-2 times a month needs to be possible (his job). That can be a flight if it’s not crazy. Thoughts? Recommendations?

I’m working at a non big4 consulting firm for about 1.5yrs now, doing mainly international with some M&A exposure. I want to do llm because I still want to shoot for biglaw. I have a small kid so it’ll be hard to do the program part time. Should I quit my current job and enroll full time? Meaning lose 1yr salary and taking on a job security risk. TIA!
