A question from a youngster. Is working at a big big company with slightly low pay better or working at a much smaller company with higher pay better?

In the future, after a few years, let’s say I’m at a small company and want to switch to big big company, will the “small names” hurt my chance to get into the big doors?

I have a real estate client who at the top of his organization chart owns is 50/50 partners in a real estate investment company. First question is it advantageous to have the top of the organization 50/50 partners own the r/e company as an s-corp? Any Atomic Habit readers here? I’m brainstorming identity-based habits for two things I want to change:

-I want to bill more hours, so my goal is to become the type of person who bills at least 8 a day

How do you manage competing interests during a singing or closing? I’m working on a closing scheduled for this week (obviously everything needs to be done asap) and while I’ve told folks on my other deals that this closing is very busy, I’ve gotten really snarky responses and have been told that I’m taking too long to respond to stuff that (in my opinion) is not urgent on these other deals. I’m have a new theory about why juniors always feel like idiots and wanted to see if anyone else thinks this makes sense. I’m a third year, and am the most junior person all of my teams (generally me, a senior or two, and a partner or two), and I always feel like I’m messing something up. Is this just because I never get to work with other juniors and don’t see the mistakes they make, and that it’s relatively normal? How do you bill your time? The busier I am the harder it is to bill. How do people actually bill contemporaneously in detailed terms when you bill 12 hours but literally did 100 different things in those 12 hours. And it’s never slow enough to go back and do it super detailed.

After you are stealth laid off, other than job search, what do you do? I assume they won’t give you work and even if they do, you can politely decline? How do you feel about you are not progressing anymore and seeing other people progressing in their career? I have no intention to make partner, but still feel a bit stuck not doing that much.

Am I the only one whose time entries get worse the busier and more chaotic a specific case is? Like for example preparation for a dispositive hearing with a lot of factual and legal issues that’s treated like a fire drill. My time entries are chaotic and rereading at the end of the month I feel like the time was totally justified but also like wow it sounds like we were jumping all over the place and we were, lol time entries were not your typical sequential one step at a time thing.

Obviously many of us get paid very well and there is an expectation with work demands for being paid that high. But what’s too much? How do you set a limit to preserve your mental health? I find myself guilty for taking time to decompress but I know I come back to work refocused after I do it.

Random partner asked a litigation-related question to a partner I frequently work with (i’m a transactional associate). My partner cc’d me and said for me to briefly look. Asked the library. They got me a great case. Sent it back. Now the random partner is asking for more cases in another circuit.

Can personality make up for work product? I’ve worked on two matters with a first year that multiple partners have referred to as a “superstar.” Their work was just fine on both matters and downright wrong on certain issues/points. I’ve definitely been more impressed by other first years in this class. However, this first year is incredibly outgoing and some would probably consider them “charming” (comes across as a borderline sociopath imo). Could that be why partners think so highly of them?

I’m a second year associate and last night I was online until 2:30 AM waiting for one specialists comment to a purchase agreement. I had added all comments during the day from everyone else, and the midlevel and senior were online as well, but it seemed very strange to ask me to stay up just to add three sentences to a purchase agreement.
