I heard a rumor that the job market is hot right now, maybe you can look into raising your TC by looking at other firms for a promotion.
Thanks all! Is there a way you guys recommend applying? I’ve applied to literally hundreds of jobs over the last year on LinkedIn and gotten maybe only a handful of interviews. It’s why it’s hard for me to grasp the idea that the market is hot right now. I literally can’t get past the auto screeners for 99% of the places I’ve applied. Is there a better way to be approaching this?
I'm sorry you're frustrated, OP, but some tough love for you:
- You have been here for 10 years and are still a manager in MC. You should be an established SM starting to build for your MD story (incidentally your comp would also be higher). Very possibly you have some unique career circumstances that are driving this but in general you aren't underpaid for your level, you are underleveled for your YOE.
- You decided to pay for an out of pocket EMBA without clarity around how that would affect comp? Even for a top program, that's not taken into consideration on the MC side of the house and you probably should have talked with your practice leadership before taking on the cost. I can't think of an MC practice that would care about an EMBA let alone prioritize rewards for that. Strategy would likelier be a better place if you were trying to leverage b school into more competitive comp.
- You said you can't get interviews. For sure a resume coach will help but if you're not sweating your network, former clients and colleagues...with 10 YOE in consulting you should be getting very qualified opportunities. If you're not even getting through a resume screen you have bigger issues than your resume itself.
- You seem to think the market is only hot for new grads when that is demonstrably false. The offer environment for experienced managers and leaders is incredibly hot and Ms / SMs I see leaving are taking significant upside (both leaving and coming in).
- Agree with BCG1's feedback.
Sorry to be a bit negative but I think you need some self-reflection. You're looking at these entry level offers (that aren't even in our industry) and letting that get you down when we're in the midst of probably the most candidate- / employee-empowered hiring spree of the last decade. Unless you dig more deeply into what specifically is holding you back it'll be very easy to stay stuck in the rut you are clearly dissatisfied with.
Appreciate the response and sorry if I was kicking you while you were down. If it’s more helpful - you are making more at 31 than I was. There is still loads of runway in your career and the curve can be steep. Hoping you find the right opportunity and get on a track where you feel appropriately rewarded and recognized.
@OP Strategy& is paying $173K base and BCG pays $175K for new MBA grads. If they can get that, I’m pretty sure mid-level managers should be able to beat that.

The world was very different at the end of 2020 than it is now. But thanks yea that’s good to know.
Cornell actually - so not Wharton but still i think should be pretty strong?
best not to think about how much the bankers get paid
Saturday and Sunday are priceless ✅
10th year? I just came into ACN at 160k. 2 YOE
I mean in fairness i was making $150k at lvl 9 in nyc area but it was at higher yoe and due to special circumstances. I’m sorry i don’t believe that you got offered $160k at 2 yoe for applied intelligence level 9 :)
Good talking though!
10 years into the firm I was earning 140k as a Senior Manager... at 31. Not sure why you feel underpaid. Earning more than that a few years later as a CL4, but at 31 it seems like you're doing great!
Thanks this is helpful.
