Currently at one of the Big 3 Japanese banks (MUFG, Mizuho, SMBC) in debt capital markets and might have an opportunity to join the Capital Markets team at Wells Fargo (all in London). What are the thoughts reputationally on WF vs the Japanese banks in EMEA? Also if anyone has any insight into promotions (ability to go up the ranks faster in WF) and salary what would be super helpful! Wells Fargo Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, Inc.

They aren't as high and the gap gets wider the more senior you go. All I can say is the focus in the UK is generally more on balance rather than pay. 5-6 weeks holiday + bank is the norm rather than 2. I have at least 6 months of full paid sick pay (I once had to Google what a sick day allowance was) and it's very difficult to be fired. While I can't speak for everyone, no one in my team will batt an eyelid if I get in 9 and leave at 5. The focus in the US tends to be work hard and you're rewarded. Colleagues I've spoken to in NY are paid much more (though NY COL is higher) but they're also expected to be in at least one day most weekends and frequently work into the night. The worst thing is if you work for a US institution in London, as that tends to be the worst of both worlds. Also the weak Sterling and strong dollar plays into it at the moment. There were times where £60k was almost $120k, but wages haven't really followed the currency movements
Duh lol but it’s the trade off you get for living that glorious European life babey
Also 60k GBP to 95k USD differential seems on par to me when factoring in us COL. I make 65k gbp base in london and my nyc counterparts make 110k. Atlanta cheaper so I would say 60k seems pretty on par
This is not to mention that at a 60k salary in london you already make twice as much as the national average in the UK. This is also not to mention that the exchange rate had been garbage the past few months although it’s slowly getting better
But all things considered would you rather live in smelly and ratchet Atlanta and be a slave to your car or would u rather live in arguably the world’s most international city with fantastic public transportation and access to the European continent a 45 min flight away
