Pick yourself up. Life is a marathon hill-climb. It’s hard and has ups and downs. Lots of downs for most of us. And very very hard. Comparing yourself to the handful who get lucky is pointless and just makes you feel worse. All you can do is keep moving forward. That’s how greatness happens. One small step at a time. Over and over, consistently, day in and day out. Compare yourself to who you were yesterday, not to other people. And remember, you have it better that 99% of other people in this crazy world, so stop whining and moping.

For what it’s worth, I’ve been let go 3 times in a 25 year career. It sucks. It’s hard. It’s depressing and it led to massive drinking (for me). But keep on going. One step at a time. And you’ll get through it. Stopping, inaction, inertia - these are your worst enemies.
I will guess he is under 25? He has got a whole life ahead of him and life will present good opportunities. It’s okay to feel a little down for now but believe me it’s going to be alright.
Yup, he just turned 23
Fired twice in a career of 10 years for “performance”...my year end this year was above above and specifically called out a top performer. I was down too especially the second time. Turned out I was let go because they needed to reduce headcount by 1 and I was the only one unstaffed at that time. It sucked then but I got over it. It’s all a part of the game. Don’t take it personally but don’t forget either.
Get back on the horse and ride like the wind woody!!
I left my job without another job a few weeks before covid. Job search was stressful but everything worked out. He just has to be persistent and use the time to learn new skills.

I got fired after a year for poor performance, found a job I liked way more that also payed more within a few months. It obviously sucks but he’ll be okay in the long term
Been there before. The best advice is no matter how many different pieces of s**** you cross paths with (and there will be plenty more guaranteed) , the only one that defines your career is YOU. If you’re the real deal, this is just a speed and again there will be plenty more

This is a common practice in consulting. Companies don’t want to admit they have to lay-off people because that’s bad for business so they claim it’s performance issues. He will look back at this in one year and tell this story to someone in his shows now. This will be just one story in his career. If he’s s in a financial position to be okay, he should chill for a couple weeks and then start applying to other roles.

careers aren’t linear. There are going to be great years and shit months. The trick is to keep moving forward and as he does, make sure he’s picking up valuable skills and evolving along the way.
The other thing I would strongly suggest is he build a life outside work. Wrapping your identity in your work isn’t healthy.

Grieve, then try to get the feedback on performance to learn from it and prevent it from happening again (take responsibility, rather than blaming covid), then make applying to jobs your job with a disciplined schedule very day of researching opportunities, networking, and applying.
