Addressing major disagreements about business direction with a partner can be challenging, but it's essential for the success and harmony of the partnership. Firstly, it's crucial to schedule a dedicated meeting to discuss the differing perspectives openly and constructively. During this discussion, it's important to actively listen to each other's viewpoints without interrupting, allowing both parties to fully express their concerns and ideas.
Once both perspectives are understood, it's beneficial to focus on finding common goals and objectives that align with the long-term vision of the business. This may involve brainstorming alternative strategies or compromises that incorporate elements of both viewpoints. It's also helpful to consider conducting thorough research and analysis to evaluate the potential risks and benefits of each proposed direction.
Throughout the discussion, it's important to maintain a respectful and collaborative tone, avoiding personal attacks or defensiveness. Remember that both partners ultimately have the same goal - the success of the business - and approach the disagreement with a mindset of finding a solution that serves this shared objective.
If despite efforts, a resolution cannot be reached immediately, it may be beneficial to agree on a temporary solution or to seek the advice of a neutral third party, such as a business mentor or mediator, to facilitate the discussion and help find a mutually agreeable path forward.
Ultimately, navigating disagreements about business direction requires patience, compromise, and a commitment to the partnership's success
This is what I do. I work with private partners to help them with growth (corp dev, front line, GTM, joint ventures, acquisitions, strategies, M&A) ... It can be in multiple ways at once (structurally, risk mitigations, experiments over investments, carve out) happy to give you some thoughts over the phone
I’ve had similar experiences 😅 I created an alignment exercise to discuss long term goals with my business partners and it’s really helped.
