What guille vega is up to these days?
If you’re white like me it’s so important to realize that we were raised in a society where institutionalized racism is normalized, and we were born with privilege. You can’t choose the color of your skin, but you can choose to put ego aside and reflect on why this isn’t happening to me, and be vocal about being anti-racist.
Modern problems require modern solutions.

Did you get promoted to CD? If not, do not lie about your title. It won’t help you, and it’s disingenuous to the people you want to work with next.
yeah, the “i promise, you’ll be promoted” card may or may not pan out, so it’ll be super awkward if someone that knows you through somebody else says “no, that person wasn’t a CD” if asked about you.
No, you’ll be the laughing stock of your LinkedIn network. I’ve seen too many screenshots passed around (in normal times) of people getting laid off and giving themselves title bumps. It just smells desperation and is not an attractive trait for a hire.
So, best for your reputation to stay realistic. And like said above, if your future employer asks about you, that’s a bad look.
That said sorry to hear, that’s a bummer.

The upside is, it’ll be a lot easier to get a job as an Art Director than a CD in this current market. Because an AD is cheaper. But if they did want a CD, they’d expect you to have some real experience in that role. So just changing your title for 5 minutes isn’t enough.
Sorry to hear you were laid off. I agree with a lot of the points made already, do not inflate your title. It does no one any good. And if/when you get into the interview process, I’d steer clear of saying “They said I’d be promoted, so I’m practically a CD!” if it were me. You might phrase it differently, “I was on a growth track to become a CD, was working with senior creatives who wanted to see me in that position and I learned a lot...” Better to give the impression of great potential than bitter entitlement.

How would you get produce from our director to creative director? There’s about two positions in between. And why would they promote you only if you could do a Townhall video for internal use? That’s not will get you promoted. You’ve been lied to.
Some companies confirm titles when they do a background check. So might get you in trouble when they reach out to hr in your old company.

AD1 is correct. Furthermore it’s illegal for them to ask you your current or previous salary. They can only ask for you expectations. This is an anti-discrimination law, intended to prevent certain groups or genders from being stuck in low salary brackets.
Thanks. Will leave it how it is :-)
Sounds hella dubious... from AD straight to CD and all because of some townhall presos? Either you’re a real rockstar, in which case you’ll be fine—I’m sure if you’re talented af then it won’t be long at your new job to achieve the same feat. Or you’ve been lied to and are extremely naive. I’m going with the latter since you seem to think you can simply give yourself the promotion you “think” you deserve while not actually achieving it.
I worked on a team that mistakenly hired people who had promoted themselves TWICE. Not only did those people get fired very quickly once it became clear they hadn’t had experience walking the walk, they also became the laughing stock of our internal org. No one would work with them again and all 30ish of us would eagerly dish for any future jobs these people sought out. Don’t risk cratering your network
Maybe you can negotiate with HR as a part of your exit package to give you the title. Tell them about your circumstance. They won’t have to pay you out at the level, so I think they may be willing to accommodate. And tell them it will be better for your future job prospect considering they are laying you off before your promised promotion. Good luck!
Don’t lie. Period.
I’m sorry for all this. It’s not a good idea to promote yourself though. Too many people know too many people.
