I wouldn't bother asking, hiring packages are pretty standard, I doubt it's negotiable.
Jesus Christ what is it with the idiots who always say don't negotiate on this app. IT NEVER HURTS TO NEGOTIATE IF YOU ASK POLITELY. And please don't share your opinion if you don't know what you're talking about...
OP, congrats for getting him thru with your marriage intact. Now, the bad news that the law school and the bar journals won't tel, you. Until Desert Storm pushed career military officers ahead of it in some (not all) areas, law had the highest chemical abuse, untreated depression, 1,2,3 divorce rates, and suspicious self inflicted death rates in the nation, and it sat as king or contender on those points for decades and still does. Average tenure from graduation to 'give up the license and do ANYTHING else' is about 15 years. This is coincidentally how long it takes most to pay off unreconstructed student loan collections coming out of law school.
Was it a mistake to do? I could never in good conscience say that to you, or more importantly to me, I could never say it to my mother or my husband, both of whom love the law and both of whom I helped put thru not only law school degree each but also graduate law programs. If your husband loves it, fantastic. But you have both entered a dangerous profession, dangerous to him, you, and your family, mainly because no one will speak up about these long running, known problems. Love it, with your eyes wide open.
Is he getting the 180k upgraded salary?
@OP there are so many people who are so miserable / so far up their own asshole on this app
As a general rule, signing bonus is NOT done in the legal profession. Paying for relo or bar prep fees or bar study time ARE what are held out in the place of signing bonus. There used to be bar passing bonus or salary bump, but these have greatly fallen away. Remember, the legal profession is not the cash engine it was once fantasized to be and except for a very few specialties and markets, is facing its third decade of steep cost pressures (nay sayers, shut the fuck up, yes, I do know what I'm talking about). Unless you already know of a certain unshakable fact that you personally are in one of those islands of exception, it will hurt you to attempt to force increased 'alternate considerations at the outset'. The only thing you MIGHT get away w if not already outlined, is post bar admission salary adjustment.
Good luck! You've already done the one thing I could not convince my husband to do at the outset, therapy. He does that now (20 years after graduation), yes fit is extraordinarily important, and hard to come by for phd's and jd's. He's in now, much happier, healthier, and now planning his own life rather than following the law firm script. You're ahead of the game. I'm glad to hear it. (Also, it's your law degree too, make sure you revel a little, we little helper wives rock!, kid you not, have been called that to my face by a partner who could not get his head around the fact that this little helper pulled down more as a 'geek' than he did owning a chunk of a successful law firm)
My wife is also a lawyer and she also said there is no signing bonus in the legal industry...
A- that was my thinking, but he has been told that "they are not a thing in the legal world" by so many people that he is hesitant to even bring it up. Of course the consultant and wife in me is like, "go after the money!"
Thanks, P1! I know, that's my thinking too. He said he feels like it is such a good offer that he doesn't want to ruin anything.
I know what I'm talking about, I came from biglaw. Stfu Accenture. OP sure go try despite every lawyer telling you it's not a thing in law.
C2, I'm an attorney too. It's not a thing, but he can ask. He's not going to lose his offer. What difference does it make?
Love you, EY. Thanks so much! Yeah, getting him to go to therapy was like pulling a donkey uphill. He eventually budged. I've even gotten him to do acupuncture for anxiety! He is doing so much better. So necessary. Yes, helper wives! No small feat. Don't get me started on this semester's add-drop period. Oh yeah, did I mention that he was also an exec editor of the main journal? SO glad that that one is over! 🤓😜💃🏻💃🏻
Sorry to hear that. My husband dropped down, after a strong baseline set, to once a month. Even if he can't tell, I can see the benefits and tell him so, sometimes to his annoyance. 'I'm glad you have someone to talk thinks they with. It's clearly good for you.' is hard to snipe at.
They're not. My sister got 160 and 10 for "relocation" while she studied for the bad. DC. Would assume similar for NYC
Bar*
He is! Yes, his offer letter has the same $10k start-up plus bar money
To drink or pass it?
Haha exactly, probably both, but in all seriousness, money to pay for bar prep class and to live off of while studying
Yeah that's standard procedure among the big firms. Cheers to your husband!
