40 hours a week should t be considered slow
Be proactive when you have the energy. If you’re feeling burnt out, embrace the slow moments. 💪
Thats really bad management. If I have someone (or myself) who is clocking 55 hours a week every so often I’m telling them to use that downtime to exercise, relax, do some personal projects or work to stay motivated, and enjoy the downtime.
It’s not healthy for you to always be at 100%.
If you're still working 35-40 hours a week during your "slow" period, then you're working a normal full-time job. Is your manager expecting you to put in an extra 15-20 hours just for the hell of it???
I’ve been at / seen agencies like this. It’s not sustainable if they want to keep good people. Plus it creates classes as many staff will say no at work beyond 40-50 hrs/week. And so a subset winds up being worked even harder.
I always always tell my teams to embrace the slow weeks/days when we have them.
I’m currently at a place that acts like this and it considerably changes my attitude towards the work. I feel more motivated to work harder and be more present when there is lots going. I feel like I can rest when I need to and then be 120% when I need to.
Fake it. You don’t always have to be transparent about your workload or how much time you need to complete your tasks. You obviously deserve a break, enjoy it and fake being busy and don’t feel guilty about it. Managers will always ask for more, leaders will not.
Yes. Fake it until you make it. Seriously.
If you want a boring 9-5, don’t work in advtg. Advtg is like the ocean…it ebbs, it flows, you either love it or hate it but no 2 days are the same.
Everyone needs some downtime now and then. You are smart to guard yourself from burnout. From a manager’s perspective, it is better in the long run. You’re better equipped to handle the busy times and more likely to stay. You can always help a little now and then if there’s an extra long slow spell. And your slow weeks are still a full-time allocation.
They will work you till you die. Consider the 60 hours as coverage for the 35 hour ‘slow’ weeks
At my job we’re more or less expected
To take up any slack if anyone else is slammed. If there is no slack to take up, then… we’ll whatever. Lately I’ve been trying to find some side work to make some money, I’ve been so slow.
