I’ve worked from home before but usually when I’m under-utilised and not more than one or two days at a time, so it didn’t really matter that I was easily distracted.
I also dread that I’ll have to eat lunch by myself and coffee breaks will just by me, myself and I.
Keep your calendar full. I tend to get less productive in the afternoons on wfh days so I started scheduling working sessions with my staff in the afternoons to help keep me on course
Where ever you decide to work (home office, dining room table, etc.) make sure it’s comfortable and free of distractions. Also, every morning, spend a few moments cleaning up your space and organizing. Depending on how much of a morning person you are or just how focused you are overall, start your day off like you are at the office. For me, I’m not a morning person, so I can’t just roll over in my PJs and start working. So, I will put something else on to wear through the day, freshen up a bit and go about my day as if I’m at work. This helps me kick the mentality that I’m at home so I can slack.
Yes to all of this!
ALSO! Set touch points and expectations with your team DAILY! You MUST be in communication with your team daily for success. Even if it’s 10 minutes in AM and PM.
Ergonomics is so important: a good desk setup, not just opening your laptop on the kitchen table. Desk monitors, comfortable office chair, good keyboard, etc. if this thing results in weeks of remote, I’d go invest in a good chair and monitors today.
Schedule video or calls with your team, above and below you, often. Even if it’s just to check in or keep in contact. Short 5 minute checkin sessions with each staff or senior, preferably at the latter half of the day when people (incl yourself) start getting lazy/tired.
If possible, and I understand for many this is impossible, find somewhere you don’t normally use in your free time and set up your work station there. It helps keep your work and life separate, which has the benefit of lessening distractions.
Get up, shower, dress. If we still can, drive and get a coffee, allows for some social interaction. Dedicated space with closing door is best. Large monitor(s) printer and scanner, or ways to do each of those things is best. Take breaks like you would at office. And when you are done for the day get up, and close the door so you are less tempted to work longer than you should.
Ha ha ha yes much better
Follow normal routine as if going to office. Be prepared for video calls instead of face to face. It keeps me on my toes. If you are sitting around in PJs with TV in background it won’t work which is the point.
Tidy your workspace, set good light, do not work sitting on your bed, keep the tv off - music or background noise is fine, laundry actually works well for me), you can stay in your sweatpants but shower and fix your face/clean up before you start, and when it’s time to quit for the day, quit for the day and put it away. Spread your errands out across the week to help you get out and away. Don’t get in the habit of 5:00 drinks. And communicate better - even if you’re already good at it - distance requires better effort to communicate.
Yes. That would actually work now more offices are saying they’ll let ppl work from home. :)
