Need advice: Got let go after I had submitted a job app w/ active job. Have an upcoming interview - how do I bring this up? I'd imagine it'd come up in disc. of "current" projects/responsibilities.

No reason to bring it up. Don't make job searching harder

like

"In my most recent projects..." since you're not staffed at the moment. But really, there's no reason for it to come up.

like

You don't have to volunteer it. Get an offer and then mention it to HR once the background check process starts

like

Yes to AT1. Same thing happened to me that's what I did.

like

Can you position it that you left old job because you wanted a change and didn't have the flexibility or time to actually pursue something new? You can say you wanted to be 100% focused on getting the right job because you anticipate being at the next one long term

like

Also OP, did you get either severance pay or "salary continuation"? If so, your employment end date is when you get that last paycheck. So you should be fine.

like

I recommend not bringing up the layoff, ever. Firms are not supposed to release the reason for the end of employment. Only dates, position, salary. If they bring up the reason to new employer at any time, you can SUE THEIR ASS for preventing you from obtaining employment. Court is hard on companies who try to prevent future employment after layoffs. Government tries hard to keep unemployment rates down, and allowing that to happen can F a lot of things up.

like

But I'm not just not staffed...I'm unemployed. If they go to verify my dates of employment, it'll look like I tried to mislead them, no?

That's a pretty slippery game to be played

^ It's past that date, unfortunately. Basically, was on payroll when I applied, not now.

If they ask what I currently do at XYZ, it's hard not to bring it up. If I only spoke in past tense, it'd be a red flag. I keep getting 50/50 split opinions about whether to bring it up and frame it proactively. 😕

I messed up a couple times and used past tense. Sometimes I corrected myself. It's not a big deal.

Just bring it up. Better they find out now than you getting the offer rescinded.

I wouldn't mention it unless the employment gap is at least 2-3+ months. Employers like to hire employed people. Bringing it up now raises too many questions. If you really want to bring it up I would do what AT1 suggested and wait until you get an offer.

D1 -- Salary data? Pretty sure an employer (or ex-employer) does now provide this information to anyone

PwC1- I'm saying above that they do provide salary data. Only dates, position, salary - only these data points are supposed to be provided by previous employer.

Employers are legally allowed to release any truthful information about you. Many don't release much other than dates and position out of practice and internal company policy but that doesn't mean they can't. You can't sue if they release something that is true unless you have an NDA, which most people don't.

If at Deloitte, they use The Work Number which only provides that info. My employment lawyer said you can sue. Anyway we are off topic. OP, don't say you are laid off, you are not obligated to provide that info, and most other people in your shoes that end up with jobs don't provide it either.

D1, is it exact employment dates or Month A to Month B? Thanks for the advice, all.

Month A to B

Hi 🐠!

Im current at EY in a consulting group that does not focus on deals, but have completed few due diligence type engagements. We focus mostly on ODD (Operational Due Diligence) for private equity firms. I really want to make it into IB. I have an interview for a Valuation and Opinions Role. Would that help in transitioning in as an IB Analyst? I would have a substantial pay cut (100K to 85K - excluding bonus). My current experience has not been seen as valuable by recruiters.

As it allows having an acquaintance or a friend to earn those 20 points, it can help my PR application.

Anyone who is PR and resident of Manitoba can dm me to discuss around it. I am ready to pay for this assistance as well.
