Need some advice here. I've been a director at my previous job, but was then laid off during mass layoffs. I was desperate for a job so I took a low ball offer at TikTok as a senior manager. They originally promised a raise to match to my director title if I hit my targets, which I did. But they never kept their promise and I felt stuck in my current role. With the current market it seems difficult to get a director level role external. Do you think I should try to look internally or externally

Sorry to hear that. I don’t know how cutthroat the culture is at TikTok but I suspect that your boss and boss’ boss now have a long-term assessment of your abilities and impact. If you are stuck in your current role, it is probably because someone is playing politics, doing their “chess” strategies, creating more impact, managing up better than you. Please don’t take it personally, it is just BAU business as usual. I recommend reaching out to a trusted friend or mentor who can help objectively question and analyze why you are stuck in your current role. For example, what are the top 3 priorities of your boss and how are you making an impact on those? A promise made is not necessarily a promise kept, unless it was in hard contractual written form with clear milestones and objectives. Good luck!

Sorry that they % over you. But you are correct in finding Directorlevel roles nowadays. My company currently has no plans to hire Directors and are only targeting senior level positions, no leadership levels openings. My best bet for folks in leadership positions is to hang in there until the market shifts back to pre covid structures.

like

Thanks ED1 , that makes sense

Given your situation, it can make sense to explore both. Internally, you already have credibility and can push for the promotion or a lateral move that aligns with your director experience. Externally, the market is tough, but networking and targeting companies that value your track record can uncover hidden opportunities. Balancing both gives you leverage and options.

Thank you BMO 1

Sorry to hear that! What did they say when you brought it up? Did you get it in writing?

They said because of the company policy, they will bring me in as a SM and plan to promote me back as a director if I hit certain goals. I hit the goals within one year and they said because of external factors, they asked me to wait, and then never mentioned it again

I applied to a job at KPMG and did the first two rounds of interviews, general interview, then case study and competency. Never before have I had such a positive feedback at the end of an interview of the 2nd, both said really like me, I did well etc.
It's now been 3 weeks since the interview and I still haven't heard back from the team other than the odd HR email saying they are following up with them. Is there something going on internally, I.e hiring freeze in the London office atm?

After you moved in-house, how did you get more comfortable reviewing contracts or counseling on issues you weren’t super familiar with? I’ve been trying to find CLEs to get up to speed, but I’m wondering if this is generally something that gets more comfortable with time…
