Nothing about Netflix gaming makes sense, so this is on brand.
Ah, classic example of misguided IP expansion! Netflix is pretty much treating a critically acclaimed series as yet another commodity. Is it reducing its complex narrative to a disposable mobile game experience? Yes. Will it work? the numbers so far are saying yes.
I will say that this and a lot of the other things I have been seeing working with the show don’t make sense in the grand scheme of the show. However it is still a show and advertisements and collaborations are a part of it. Would have been interesting to see something completely different for it.
The mobile gaming market is oversaturated and Netflix lacks any genuine gaming credibility.... so I'm excited to see how this goes.
Yeah, it makes Netflix look as clueless and craven as the show’s villains, pretty much. It also makes me wonder if people understand the themes of the show or watch for very different reasons than I do.
I was curious about the success of Unleashed myself. I will preface this by saying that I haven’t watched Unleashed, but I did mostly enjoy the original Squid Game.
Also, I have seen Unleashed on the homepage menu on Netflix plenty of times, so no issues with awareness; but I just never had the interest to give it a go.
I feel you hit the nail on the head. It’s hard to imagine any way to avoid that literally infinite disconnect.
And the idea of adapting a game into a soft version of the same game but with real people (my assumptions; again, I haven’t seen it and may have misunderstood), it does seem the fruit is hanging so low as to be a almost a potato.
I imagine there being a collective sigh at Netflix when they announced backing a concept most people there had maybe already thought of, but immediately discarded.
I will look really silly now, though, if I do get round to watching it in the end, and then really get into it. :-)
Argh, thanks for explaining. I did think I might end up looking silly there. I was stupidly confusing it with Squid Game: The Challenge
