Not until after first trimester.
Everyone is different. I’m going to wait until I’m showing. I’m at 15 weeks now and no one has a clue, work pants getting tight and wearing baggy shirts to client site. Probably another 4-6 weeks before I’ll tell my lead MD
Ahh, that’s nice. I remember I didn’t start showing until 20 weeks+ with my first.
With my second I was definitely showing by the end of first trimester.
I told my manager almost immediately, but that’s because my first trimester sickness was brutal. I had to call in sick several days in the beginning. I told the rest of my immediate team after 12 weeks and the larger team around 20 weeks when I was showing.
Congratulations. I didn’t mention anything until I was 5 months pregnant and then my water broke during the meeting about coverage . She came 4 weeks early . Do it when you are ready
I let my leaders know earlier, mostly because my first trimesters were brutal on me. I never told my team until after 1st trimester. I also always spoke with HR early on so I could get information on how to handle LOAs and such
If you work remotely, please give your team 3 months notice. At my previous employer, I had a remote worker who filed her disability and family leave paperwork and let us know 3 weeks before her maternity leave started. It was fun getting her sites covered.
Since it was medical she didn’t have an “obligation” to let me know. Ugh.
She probably did it that way because employers find sneaky ways to significantly lower hours and/or lay off pregnant women once they get to a certain stage of pregnancy instead of finding ways to work around someone’s maternity leave. It’s a way of making them quit on their own and if they don’t, they get laid off if the employer really wants them out, stating “we’ve had budget cuts that effect your department/position”. They know it’s illegal but it’s always done in such a way that it’s hard for the employee to prove.
Do it when you feel ready/when it feels right for you, and be sure to look up and know your legal rights in your state. Never hurts to be informed. Congratulations!
I waited until viability week (26 weeks) because I had a rough first trimester and wanted to feel more relaxed about it and get on a project that took me to my leave date to make sure my chargeable hours stayed up before being out.
20 weeks 🤗 congratulations 🎉
I told them at 12 weeks, only bc I was suffering from all day sickness and calling out a lot. Otherwise, I likely would have waited until I was showing.
Congratulations 🎉 and whenever you are comfortable. I informed my employer after 3 months.
I recently found out I’m 11 weeks pregnant with 3rd (total surprise and high risk since I’m older and previous we’re IVF) I was told for years it would never happen naturally. We are shocked and excited but I’m terrified to let work know because I’m at a large consulting firm and the company has been doing layoffs in every group. I know I’m pretty safe at the moment but I feel like if I say something before end of Q1 they might take me off my current project that just started and then I truly worry about job security. So I likely won’t say anything until I’m about 26 weeks
I told work at the end of the first trimester. I was so sick and thought people knew anyway. But I knew that they couldn't really fire me.
I gave all that notice to make sure that they have time to find a replacement and they never did. I worked until 40 weeks.
And congratulations!
Don’t until you get to your third trimester. It’s no one’s business!
Really it’s up to you. I can see how certain environments might not be as supportive as others. Personally, I told people around 15-16 weeks so I was in the clear after 1st trimester and after I told friends and family. I found it helpful for my coworkers and leadership to know as they were really supportive. Alternatively, I was told not to tell my client until a few weeks before my due date and I think that really hurt the trust with some of my client relationships. Ultimately, it’s up to you based on your situation.
I would wait until after the first trimester but closer to half way through second. This would assure you have a solid understanding of your pregnancy risks and appointments going forward but also have time to explore your leave options with your state or employer and gather some questions for your direct supervisor and also present a first draft of your leave schedule.
Thanks everyone! I have a really supportive boss and team, and I work in healthcare in CA and have good benefits and FMLA. I’m not worried about keeping my job.
I’m petite and was showing with #2 closer to 15 weeks, so I’m thinking it’ll be similar this time around.
My last pregnancy was 9 years ago and I honestly don’t remember what I did as far as telling my boss and team. Thanks for all your responses!
I didn’t tell my team until 20 weeks. I just wore a lot of blousy tops and blazers and drank club soda in a rocks glass at happy hour - no one noticed.
