Pros and Cons working for the fed bank?
Additional Posts in Accounting
Advice needed - boyfriend has almost 3.5 years of finance experience at a bank. Interviewed for PwC valuation senior associate and now recruiter says they want to hire him at “experienced associate” because he has no valuation experience. Is this too big of a step backwards in career? Should he push back and see if it gets him anywhere? If he does accept Associate, is it reasonable to ask for written, definitive timeline (1 year?) for promo to Senior upon meeting standards? Help!

Here is the real answer - it depends what it was. If you were fingerprinted and your role requires a fingerprint-based background check with the FBI, it will show up. Source: CPA who allegedly committed a crime of dishonesty at 18, had it reduced to disorderly conduct, and expunged after 5 years. I’ve worked for several large financial institutions and it always comes up and despite needing an awkward explanation has not barred me from employment yet.
BDO it shows up because I was fingerprinted and the prints were submitted to the FBI database. So while a standard background check which searches against local and state records is 100% clear, one which requires a fingerprint submission turns up a result only because it is checked against the FBI’s national database. Expungements unfortunately do not seal that piece of data.
Get it expunged
Second the expunge! Having to explain a charge that was later dropped is really dumb but you’ll usually have to. People don’t understand what a non conviction is. All they see is an arrest and make big assumptions without knowing an arrest is not the same thing as guilty.
I had to get a lawyer to vouch for me and explain to HR what a dismissal is. Maybe you can go that route until it’s expunged.
Sorry for the long post. I have to add that it will show up (until expunged) and you’ll have to explain. I got a lawyer for this part bc they have a way with words to explain what happened.
I had something like this, don’t steal your car back from a tow lot.
Background check came back fine
Before joining PA I worked a job that had a lot of ex convicts/felons working it. 99% percent of those people were better than my coworkers in PA. Hope this doesn't cause you any issues.
No judgment at all. Depending on the type of background check, it may or may not show up. In many cases, once a charge is dismissed, it doesn’t appear on standard checks, but more detailed ones might still find it. You might want to check with a legal professional for clarity though
Yes it will, it may or may not be an issue though. Just be truthful about it.
Yup you may be asked to provide some details around what happened. I’ve come across similar issues with arrest records with 3 different individuals who have supported me on projects (theft, domestic incident, drunk and disorderly conduct) - the first 2 cleared the background and last didn’t. This was for a public trust background.
Od it was dicharged - then shouldn’t
It depends on the state. Some will not report after 7 years
I had mine expunged and still had to explain it when applying for a government job. The level of clearance was above public. It was not brought up at any point and I was offered a position.
You did the right thing
You can always run a background check on yourself and see what comes up.
Just be honest and if the question on the background ask about criteria that fits this then tell them. It looks way worse having to explain after the fact than before. The entire point of a background is about trustworthiness. Having this come up without being in front of it shows the opposite. Employers do t even care what it is unless it’s major. I did something 30 years ago and still to this day hate having to answer yes and explain, but it has not once gotten my offer pulled . I’m sure it would have I had not disclosed.
Great answer you're also a great example
Assume it does and plan accordingly. Never lie. I hope you didn’t lie on your application. Did you actually get dismissed from the court? I would reach out to the court to find out. It may not appear on some background checks, but depending on the depth of the check, it might show up.
Background checks today are much more thorough than in the past. But don’t feel guilty. You made a mistake. You’re a better person now, even if it appears to shut some doors. With tenacity and ambition, you will overcome this and find your rightful spot. To be honest with you, I bet you many people have broken the law, even felonies. The difference is they didn’t get caught, especially back in the day. For example, drugs, drunk driving, and driving under the influence. If I wasn’t retired, I wouldn’t let that stop me from hiring you.
100% dismissed. In process of expungement. I didn’t disclose because it didn’t ask and my atty who helped me through said I’m not convicted. Just the arrest record but that’s not proof of guilt. I’ll still be honest, but she said it’s not something I’d have to disclose. I’ve not been asked in an application. If asked, I’d explain. I don’t mind transparency.
