Can’t recommend talking to a psychologist enough. I started when I got pregnant and have decided I will forever probably. She gives me tools that help me cope and communicate effectively and it is an outlet when I feel alone or have trouble talking with friends or my partner. When I don’t want to do it - that’s when I’ve realized I need it the most.
My OB/GYN prescribed me sertraline (Zoloft) and it helped a lot. If you can't get that from your OB, try talking to your general practitioner. But ultimately, don't be afraid to talk to a physch. I have found talk therapy to be hugely helpful for my anxiety - more than the drugs ever have been.
My GP will absolutely not prescribe it without collaborating with a therapist. especially if you are nursing you need a psychiatrist with experience in pregnant and post partum women.
Weird that your OB won’t. Just left mine today and we talked about my drug options. Def try your PCP. With my first, I was also able to talk to my PPD therapist who consulted with my OB for options (at that time I declined drugs).
Talking to a psychiatrist and following their recommendation is best. You may also consider cannabis (depending if you’re nursing) - I’ve found it really helpful dealing with the anxiety
My GP prescribed me Zoloft. She gave me the option to get therapy as well, but was okay with trying medication first and had been really supportive of my continuing on it for almost 2 years now.
Try your PCP. When I first started having panic attacks, a nurse practitioner at One Medical prescribed me Xanax and they have refilled for me when needed. They also helped me find a therapist longer-term.
Psychiatrist is a good option. I hope you feel better soon. There are natural methods as well (exercise, doing more things you enjoy, practicing positive thinking, deep breathing techniques). This has helped me avoid meds, but I fully respect if you prefer the convenient med approach.
Both my GP and OB were able to prescribe me Zoloft (at different points in time), and it's been a life saver! My OB also prescribed me Xanax for the times it gets really bad or I feel an attack coming on. But they make me sleepy so I only take if really needed which hasn't been often.
My OB told me that she can prescribe Prozac or Zoloft because they have other uses that are under their remit (Prozac helps with pms symptoms supposedly). If you need real anxiety relief (like Xanax) your pcp may prescribe it but don’t be surprised if they send you to a psychiatrist. FYI, psychiatrists are just medication management, not therapy.
Is everything in check with your hormones? Specially post partum what you're feeling could be easily fixed with hormonal regulation instead of adding drugs in the mix.
