Offer advice:
$120k, 10 days PTO class of 2023 (3rd year big law M&A with in-house secondment experience). Offer feels low, it would be for customer contracts. Thoughts? Should I counter or keep looking? The PTO seems low for me as well.

Location? Unless this is in a LCOL area I’d probably pass.

This is helpful, thank you!

What experience did you get at your secondment? If it was commercial work and you were okay with that, I don't think there's much downside to taking this offer other than the pay (which is probably in line with someone who only has 2 YOE). But do you like commercial work?

This is helpful! Thank you.

What industry? Pub/priv?

Low no matter what your answer is though.

But what industry? This would make sense for something low margin.

Probably ok for TX with 2YOE and in non-tech, but PTO is pretty low, though PTO is pretty important for me personally. Is there an increase after some time or are there more sick days? Is it accrued or vested immediately (like Jan 1st)? Also is there growth and mentorship potential? How is the team? I’d probably take it at your YOE if I thought it would teach me a lot/give me room to grow and exposure.

You can always counter but be ready to get a no and have your mind made up on whether it’s a deal breaker for you.

About 6 total for sick days. Immediately vested Jan 1. Team is smaller. The intent is to grow the team. I’d have direct access to the senior counsel and GC. I actually really like the folks I’ve met so far and I believe there is some room for growth.

Sounds like something I would take since I also graduated in 2023 but I don’t have any attorney experience on my resume since my in house experience is all pre-bar. But I keep getting passed for even junior attorney jobs for people with more experience. I have no desire to work for a firm so maybe my career progression is just blocked.

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

Would love some advice / thoughts. I went straight from law school to a corporate legal department in house for an asset manager. They like “home grown” talent and I “be worked hard and risen relatively quickly (AGC in 9 years). I work hard and get a lot of complicated deals done (structured products and private funds). I can’t shake certain people (in compliance department mainly) thinking I don’t have enough experience to do what I do because I didn’t come from a law firm. Any advice?

What is work-life balance like in big tech legal? I’m currently in house at a large multinational; I like my job and I get paid fine, with a very good WLB (40-45 hrs). I want to look into FAANG-type opportunities as they would mean a huge pay bump, and I think I’m qualified, but I have no idea about the hours, and I don’t want to substantially give up WLB, as that’s why I left BigLaw. I don’t want to be miserable again. I know Amazon is poorly reputed for lawyer WLB… what about other places?

What would be a typical salary for a junior in house counsel role (3 yoe) at a publicly traded company in a secondary market (think Austin, Tampa, Charlotte)? I’m having a really hard time finding what a reasonable range would be. Most positions I’m applying to require desired salary in the application, and the truth is I’d accept anything north of 125k but don’t want to undersell myself and take a bigger cut than necessary coming from biglaw.

If you practice collections in-house, what do you earn and do you receive a bonus?

I have practiced for five years and make $121k as an employee of a financial services company. As the only attorney, I oversee all statewide collections efforts, from demand letter to garnishment, with a case volume of nearly 7k new cases per year, of which the majority I end up litigating. I receive only a $1k bonus per year. Is my compensation fair? My last insurance defense gig was $75k.

There’s also an equity component: 0.15% of current fully diluted equity. This equates to about 30000 shares at a strike price of $2. They also indicate the preferred stock price is $6 and preferred stock equity is $188k (whatever that means). They are in the middle of a new financing and valuation round.
