In the consulting game, more pay is tied with more stress and less ownership of your time from my experience. At a certain point, trade off isn’t worth it. Everyone has a different boundary. I know a number of people who would make incredible executives for example, but stop short of breaking that boundary since they value other things in their lives.
This. Also feel like you have less and less say so over what you want to do. You will be required to do work you may not want to do and have no interest in vs. When you are being paid less or at a lower level it is easier to pivot to other things you may like more.
I made a move that went from 72k (severely underpaid) to 138k + bonus.
I thought it was a course correct. But then after 2.5 years at that firm (making 165k), I could not find a job that was anywhere near that amount. Headhunters would call me and mention an "unbelievable salary" of around 120K-130K.
Ended up making a jump and made an increase, but or was over 150 job applications later. Made me really think that, "ya, I do get paid fairly well"
It normalizes based on peer comparison at every step of the increase. But at a certain point you stop comparing salaries and care more about other things that offer value outside of external markers like relationships, alignment of personal values w/ day to day actions, etc.
Honestly so true. These days I don't have time to have dinner with my wife, let alone do any of my hobbies. I've even thought about leaving for less pay if i can't get it under control

I agree, that’s just when I started feeling like I didn’t have to worry have to stress about money as much and start to afford to put a little away every month.
I make close to 300k but living in NYC, I still feel middle class 😧
Yep. That is middle class in NYC. It's an interesting spot because 200 to 300k in NYC is middle class. It's a lot of money but still middle class which feels like an oxymoron. Thanks for sharing!
