On the cusp of SM and excited about my progression. When I talk to family / friends about my current role, they ask how many people I manage and don’t understand what we do. Why is this the barometer?

It’s just an industry thing. An ex coworker of mine manages a team of 100+ and takes immense pride in it. I manage a team of 3 and make more.

Outside of understanding the concept or difficulty of your work, anybody can understand people and size - so it translates and makes it more relatable and easier to understand.

This is such a damn circle jerk. I got a big ole secret for all of you.

NOBODY GIVES A DAMN. NOR SHOULD THEY.

Management in the non-consulting world is about managing people (eg middle management), not business. Business development is done by ADs, not Managers and above. It might help to tell them that it means you manage a book of business, and that includes making sure you sell $X MM/year and make sure it gets delivered. You're more like a CEO of a particular line of business than middle management.

Most every other company’s “Sr. Manager” role involves managing people, so it only makes sense that question gets asked often and as a baseline because it is the only function that many people know a Sr. Manager to serve.
If they already know what you do as a manager, they will probably be excited for you as they know the context of the promotion. If they don’t already know what you do as a manager, they probably already don’t have an interest in your career so expecting excitement from them on this promotion is unrealistic.

That’s their barometer because it’s the easiest to understand. Perhaps take more time trying to make them understand the type of work you do? You don’t need to explain this to all your friends - I think it helps with immediate family though. I find having your parents and maybe closest friends understand what you do helps not just in cheering you on with these milestones, but also understand your work hours, travel, difference in stressors, etc. If you want help with making them see the impact of your career progression, maybe size of deal ($$$$) would help?

SC1 that was rude.
OP how many years did it take to get to SM?

When I tell them 1-4 depending on the project, they seem surprised and immediately downgrade it. I know it’s an ego thing and I’m still really excited about my work and role, but how can I explain this better? I’ve tried telling them i manage processes but that doesn’t make sense either

Thank you, I needed the context and explanation. I don’t know why this bothers me and why I’m clearly not communicating effectively

Have ran into this before with family and friends who don’t understand the consulting world. This goes with the importance of job title and having an office. In today’s age none of this matters to me. I find people who worry about this stuff are often very insecure

EY1, not worried and not insecure, just having trouble with communicating this to my nearest and dearest. I don’t need the pomp and circumstance, I know I’m not doing life saving or revolutionary work, I just want to know how to change the conversation and provide more context

I currently work as an APM at a FAANG company but recently received an offer to join an MBB. I’m very excited about the role but didn’t realize I’d need to take a pay cut when I applied (~100k base + ~20k bonus + ~60k equity vs. 90k base + 10-20k bonus). Considering that I currently work 40-60 hours/week, I’ll be making significantly less per hour at the MBB. I’m very interested in the opportunity but also don’t want to make a poor financial decision early in my career. Thank you for your time!
