Don’t be afraid to pick up if the partner knows you’ve never swung something besides a 7 iron you aren’t gonna make a fool of yourself. Just go hit a couple shots each hole, and if it’s not going well pick up and maybe drop a ball on the green. Alternatively, maybe suggest doing a scramble. As far as clubs I’d probably just rent a set at the course.
Came her to say this. Above all else, play at pace. You don’t have to rush your shots or sprint to your ball, but if you’re hitting shot #5 on a par 4 from 199 yards out, you probably should just pick it up and maybe take a putt, but don’t try to finish that hole.
I have never broken 100 and some days when it’s crowded and I’m playing with people way better then me, if my first 2-3 shots (depends on par and distance) go awry, I’ll just pick up. Sometimes I’ll drop next to my partner is playing from but not try to finish normally.
Rent a set. Many local and muni golf courses will let you rent a set. Also, maybe take a lesson or 2 and/or hit the range before your big round.
Update: (Bit late, so apologize) The game went phenomenal. It was a 'best ball' type contest and our team had four folks. I'd say the senior partner was better than me but definitely well below the other two of the team. I had a lot of good moments where I contributed to the 'best ball'. Had two really good putts. We landed at 62.
All in all a fun game.
Pull a sickie 😂
Above all else, enjoy being outdoors and spending time getting to know the people you’re playing with. They have to remember it was once their first time too!
you just called a round a game
It’s never called a game in the UK. It’s a round of golf, a competition or a match.
Rent clubs. Suggest playing a scramble type format. Bring a ton of golf balls & plan on losing most of them.
Most of all, relax! I’m a newbie as well & I find if I’m worried about how bad I’m playing, I play even worse. But if I have a drink or focus more on having fun with friends, I play better or I just don’t care that I’m bad at golf.
I'd recommend getting to a range with some basic clubs, you can pick up a set and bag for next to nothing on ebay or fb market place.
Get comfortable with a few clubs, if you've never played alot of your shots probably won't be pretty, just keep it simple and don't put too much pressure on yourself.
Enjoy the time and the opportunity to network.
How’d it go OP?! I hope you enjoyed the day!
Not yet pwc2. Have two more weeks to prep at the range. Thanks for checking in. Will drop an update soon after.
