Jesus just leave already
I came here to write the same thing
It’s your life not theirs, gotta put yourself first if you’re unhappy
Agreed! Definitely need to think of what will make me happy and what’s the best decision for myself. I’m sure once I leave and I’m happy again all this will be be water under the bridge
OP yes don't leave. If you leave you will be letting your team, your service line and EY down. They will never be profitable again! Please think before you do this.
Thanks, you convinced me to stay…
Everyone is replaceable. The firm has turnover all the time and knows how to get staffing. It’s not your problem. Do what’s best for you.
If for some reason the firm needed to replace your or let you go, they would do it. So don’t worry about leaving them.
I understand your pain - the firm kind of forces the employees to bear the brunt of turnover instead of the firm bearing the cost itself by cutting back on work. Unfortunately this leads to increased turnover. At the end of the day, you shouldn't allow the firm to strong-arm you into staying.
It is the firms responsibility to maintain a culture that makes people want to stay, not yours. You can empathize about the busy season those left are going to have, but unless you have some kind of control over hiring and culture it's not your problem.
My old office lost 23 of 26 seniors in 8 months. It isn't your job to lead your office to success and it isn't your responsibility to feel beholden to a team or office that doesn't achieve whatever you define "success" as. Don't feel guilty!
If they wanted you to stay
They would have paid you competively
The firm will replace you and dispose of you at any time. They ain’t loyal
There may be reasons to stay, but some kind of survivor's guilt is not one of them.
I've had my eye on the door since I started (5+ years ago) because hardly anyone status forever. Yet, I'm still here lol.
Anytime someone leaves (voluntarily), regardless how it effects current audits, I think "good for you, buddy"
The firms will figure it out, I would focus on yourself and not worry about them. Unfortunately, they are probably going to pile the work on remaining staff but that’s there problem because they don’t have adequate staffing.
Not a staff but one of my closest friends who was a manager I worked with closely quit during busy season, at a time where our group has been hemorrhaging seniors to senior mgrs. if you really are good friends they’ll understand and still be friends with you. Plus you can give unfiltered advice.
What’s the reason for leaving?
Dude...this is the reason to leave. Was going to ask because I can see staying for less money if you like what you do and your team. The moment the culture is bad is the moment you consider any other option.
I’d also add- I think all the firms made a lot of assumptions waiting to see what happened with the pandemic. We’re now on the other side, with many practices oversold with bare bones teams. The people who have managed to hang on through the last year expect to be rewarded pretty handsomely. Ironically, if that doesn’t happen expect to see people hopping between firms to get a raise and the firms paying through the nose for basically the same talent.
Maybe it's not guilt but you are learning to enjoy the job
Hey OP, it’s understandable that you would feel a sense of responsibility to stick around. It makes you a decent person.
However, it’s not your responsibility to save others OR fix problems.
As an employee you’re replaceable. as a teammate you’re replaceable. Think about yourself and of your own happiness.
Say you stay. What happens when all the new staff you’re worrying about quit in the next few months? What if you stick around too long and end up having to do another busy season?
You said that 3-5 seniors quit or plan on quitting soon. You’ll be one of the first people to be screwed over majorly by that. Please think about yourself. It’s ok if after al the thinking you decide to stay. But make the reason why you’re staying about what YOU want (career progression, money, experience etc) and NOT about other people (loyalty, helping staff, saving the team etc).
You DO NOT owe anybody anythingZ
OP- did you leave yet ?
