Over half of my coworkers working in county adult correctional facilities are toxic to the core. Why is that so? The job isn't so demanding as juvenile corrections and pays $30/hr with good medical. Despite this, most of them are heavy drinkers, obese, and carry a negative aura every day. How do you guys cope with the job in healthy ways?

I just do my own thing. The best way to deal with them is to avoid them. Just avoid the things that are not necessary with the job and that might put you at risk in the future.

It could be quite demanding at times. Well, I know it is not a justified excuse. But they also need to release some stress.

Law enforcement can be a daunting job. We see so much on a daily basis and if we don't have a good outlet it will come out on the inmates

The cliquey behavior is what irks me the most. Some folks just can't leave high school behind them I suppose. Personally, my coping mechanisms are playing with my dog and cats, playing guitar, being with friends, etc.

I can attest to this. Most of them cope with the job in unhealthy ways. Drinking is only one of those ways.

How does a person change their mindset to be more positive? I feel like I’m meant for my job, but blame all my life problems on it….having no energy, being single at the age of 30, etc. and it seems like a never ending loop. I look for new jobs, realize I have a good job then am ok for a bit then start it all over again. When I’m off of work I’m fine and realize I have it pretty good. Only real negative is I can’t vacation with my family in March due to my busy time.

Took my first ever sick day today on account of my very poor and worsening mental health. Just could not bring myself to put in another 14 hour day with back to back meetings and constant activity. Felt very guilty but I honestly wish I could be more honest and actually share with my manager about why I took a day off.

For those also going through this, any tips on how you manage yourself day to day? What self talk tends to help?
