Dance party break. Make a playlist with them and then take 5-10 min breaks, or at the end of the day, to crank up the playlist and let it all out. We all need more movement these days!
Build in the time in your schedule. Actually block off times on your calendar.
One of the few bright spots of the pandemic has been spending *more* time with the kids, not less.
Why do you feel you have to be tethered to the computer all day with no breaks? It's not a reasonable expectation. What about the commute time you're gaining back? What about getting work done after their bedtime?
It seems like you're either in a bad work situation or struggling to defend your boundaries. Make a change.
@ACD: I have weeks/days that are similar to how you describe. I try to bring one kid (I have two, so I try to separate them and give them 1:1 attention whenever possible) into my office and let them sit at my computer, ‘type their name’ / pretend call me / draw next to me while I work while they stand on a chair / etc.... every other day within the week, or at very least every Friday on my crazy weeks.
They are in-and-out in 7 minutes > I tell them to say goodbye to the computer/phone/hang up the drawing and give them an orange tic-tac as they exit (M&Ms work too). It’s what I call a ‘hug break’.
When the weather is decent, I choose one to walk to the mailbox with (we rotate to keep it fair) and we take the long way to the mailbox (we live in Chicago, so I can make it last half an hour).
These are not ‘hour long lunches’ that some amazing working moms say they love to have EVERYDAY (?) — I, myself, can’t do those regularly and do use my lunch often for me...and sometimes have to work through lunch even while WFH. Don’t shame yourself if you don’t do the lunches; it’s ok if it’s not the way you ‘mom’ - shake that off and look for the micro-moments and mini rituals.
The amusing thing - in my experience - is that at the end of the day, when I ask each kid ‘what their favorite part of their day was’ > they often bring up the mailbox walk! Or the drawing they did while I worked.
You do you. Find seven minutes. Or five. Or start with 3. Make it your ritual. Do what works so at the end of the day they can consider mentioning you as their fav part of the day. 👍🏼
I wake up at 5 and start working by 6 or so. I usually have all my work done for the day by 9. The rest of the day is just meetings and tweaks. Gives me a lot of time to pop in and out with the kids and some days I can even get a nap in. Plus, it’s just so incredibly peaceful early in the morning. Great time to enjoy before everyone else wakes up.
That sounds amazing - good for you!
Smoke some weed before emerging from your office. Does wonders for reigniting the wonder of playing with your kids and lengthening your patience too.

Can you try to take a break for lunch and hang out with them at least then?
