Private.
There are a handful good public schools in SF, but most have bad reputation. There are good public school options in Marin, on the peninsula, and in the (far) east bay (Orinda, WC, etc) but definitely do your research if you send kids to SF public school.
Thank you!!
We’re deciding too. I spoke with my friend in NY who sends her kid to private and wants to switch to public due to $$$ but is having a tough time pulling the trigger because class size will go from 12 to 35
definitely looking to send my kids to private from pre to elementary school but haven’t decided middle to high. our thought is we’d leave the city to more suburban areas then where public schools will be good enough to send the kids. talking to my friends who have older kids, everyone has their own thoughts, def no right or wrong answers

If you look at the school ratings, there are a few solid public elementary schools. Where things go wrong is middle school where the SF public schools are uniformly bad.
I know a few families that are doing public elementary then planning to switch to to private for middle school. Many of the private K-8 schools have larger classes for middle school so this is pretty do-able.
Public school in the South Bay. It’s limiting career options but hoping it’s worth it.
Public schools in San Francisco seem to have a bad reputation but my experience has been great (elementary and now middle school). Teachers are amazing and the after school program and electives are awesome.
I am in the same boat as you OP. We are planning to move there before the next school year and I am not sure if we should go public or private. It seems like it is a mixed bag of reciews.
