Parents of young kids, what is your daily schedule? How much time do you spend with your kids on typical weekday and weekend? Mine is 18 m/o and I’m struggling, just looking for data points

I have about an hour with my son (2 YO) in the AM before daycare and then 3 hours or so in the evening. I really try hard not to work on the weekends other than during naps so he gets that uninterrupted time, and make a point not to schedule calls after daycare pickup. Rarely is anything so critical I cannot power back on to deal with it after bedtime. This results in lots of early mornings (think, 4 AM wakeups) and late evenings to make it work, but I refuse to compromise those few hours a day I do get with him during the week.

like

This is very informative, thank you

I am there in the morning until the nanny takes over and then dinner through bedtime most days, so ~3 hours. But I’m fully remote and reduced schedule. And it still doesn’t feel like enough. Baby is 14mo.

like

Also reduced schedule. Curious how people manage full time

time to in house

like

OP, this is where I'm at. I'm well past the sweet spot to go in-house, as I'd be making a fraction of my current comp no matter how you slice it. Unless and until I get burned out with Big Law, just going to stick it out until I hit my FIRE range. When I leave, I want to either have the freedom to truly hang up my license or be working because I truly love what I do and not because I need or care about the money anymore.

like

On office days (3) - 15m in the morning. Out by 7:15/7:30. Home by 6. Hang out until bedtime. Eat, talk to my husband, then back to work (not always). I FT if I won’t make bedtime.

At home days - hang with him until he goes to school (about 8/8:15), see him when he gets back. Log off from 5:30-bedtime. Then eat / talk to my husband / work.

Weekend - we have a babysitter for 3h every other weekend so we can do errands / see each other. Otherwise, hanging with the little one (who is 3).

like

One hour in the morning and then most of the weekend

like

I don’t log on until 9, live close to the office so I pop in for lunch and am back home working when my kid wakes up from nap (I’m working but at least have a few min), then have an hr before bedtime. Low RTO enforcement definitely helps. If my firm started aggressively enforcing I’d probably lateral. And yeah I’m tired literally all the time.

like

I’m at 4 day RTO firm and I get up and out of the house by like 6/6:30 to get the office and then am home by 5 and cook/have dinner with the family and then do bedtime. Then back online at 8 or 9 for an hour or so to finish up for the day. That’s billing 8ish hours a day. No real time for exercise or with my husband except weekends. Kids are 3 and 5.

like

Same. Goal is to bill 8 hours a day, 4 hours with the kids. Bill 3 early morning hours a day on weekends, rest with the kids. No time for much else.

Pre school morning routine, 6am wakeup so until about 8 when preschool dropoff routine (which i dont do) kicks off. Pretty low key time, we mill around, eat breakfast, i send some emails while chatting, maybe go play outside a bit if its nice and we arent already very behind schedule

I generally try to be home by 5 and usually wont go in if call schedule isnt going to be permit a late afternoon commute back. Get burned occasionally but not often.

Then 5-6 is dinner. I generally try to do the proper sit down meal and some play outside after but this hour is soft protected, i will schedule calls in it if i have no other good option

Then 6-730 is the bed time rush with sequential childhood bedtimes. I will not schedule calls in this window short of some actual disaster.

And then work after until like midnight.

So im with them... basically all non preschool time give or take some light emailing and maybe once a week dinner time call.

like

Go to the office at 8 most days (see kiddo then husband handles drop off) but if busy go in around 6/630 to get productive time. Try to transfer home mid afternoon to avoid traffic/max efficiency. Always away from computer 530-8, put kid down, log back on as needed. Work 1-4p (naptime) on weekends. Managed a 2500 hour year this way last year and it’s hard but ultimately doable! Hang in there!

How do I be a decent manager to a coworker who's upset I've been promoted twice in two years and they haven't? Is it a good decision to ask Deloitte india for a revision?
