My LM is so keen on small small things, not related to coding but documentation and all. Atleast once in a week I'm committing mistakes on small documentation points n he is stressing on same. Are there any chances that my probation will not be extended or is it a clue for me from my LM. He is Looping his LM and asking questions/clarifications.
Should I ask him directly or can be ignored or need to try outside. Please suggest Barclays
Need your suggestions

SALT JD here. Not saying CPAs can’t deliver excellent work but JDs background/training/schooling better prepares us for specialization/technical consulting work which has better margins. I didn’t have to spend the first 3 years at ey learning how to do basic research since I did it during law school.
I think CPAs are likely on the outs when it comes to international tax. I’m sure they are still willing to take CPAs but would typically need to have some background in international tax (preparing 5471s, etc). At least that is how it is in M&A. JD/LLMs typically have 2 routes out of school…law firm or big 4 and at big 4 they have 3 routes…SALT M&A, M&A, or international. So with a larger influx of LLMs, it seems the firms are less likely to higher CPAs in this role unless they have shown they are a high performer in similar backgrounds. You could always get some experience and try to do a rotation with international.
Hi there, I am a CPA and have been practicing in international tax for ~10 years. Grew up at EY and worked on all kinds of projects (and clients) - deals, tax planning, technical writing, compliance, audit, et. al. While a law credential is helpful, it is not required to be successful. Just be intellectually curious and keep learning. All the best!
Have you found that your growth opportunities in international tax as a CPA have been equal or on par with those who have a JD/LLM?
KPMG1 - you really should try this thing called Google before you put something in writing that is easily disproved and thereby show willful ignorance.
I even gave you the school.
I certainly hope you don’t do this at work.
lol, you said it’s the same degree. It’s not the same degree as LLMs can typically practice law…assuming they already passed the BAR. At the very least, it allows some students the chance to sit for the BAR. Same program/curriculum is not the same as a degree.
And that folks is the difference between a JD and a CPA.
Yes a JD makes more than a CPA at an accounting firm generally. You don’t need a JD/LLM to be in international tax
It’s to attract legal talent. They could go to a law firm and likely make much more money. Additionally, tax in general is so code heavy, having been to law school makes legal writing and understanding much easier.
Way more. It's only the way to get JD/LLMs in the door. M&A/National groups even more.
JD/LLMs have higher expectations for salary since many/most have 100k-200k student loan debt. This says nothing about the ability of CPAs vs JDs. Each have different strengths. A disciplined/trainable monkey could perform entry-level stuff in most groups.
It depends on where & what your Masters is in. For example I got a Masters in Taxation from University of Denver Law School - yes it’s the same degree as the LLM (you take classes together with the JDs). The program focuses on the interpretation of the law which is helpful in the international arena. I have a CPA not a JD.
So it’s not impossible but international does have a heavier focus on reading & understanding the code - which is law based.
I don’t think a masters in taxation is the same degree as an LLM…
lol if it’s the same degree, go practice some law and tell me how that works out for you…
