Pwc layoff victim here seeking advice- a buddy got me an interview at a bank and I'll probably get it, and the salary is great, but I want to work for a startup. I'd be doing tax compliance stuff (ctd

So much of luxury !!

Taking a job that you know that is not going to satisfy you is pointless. Talk to your buddy nicely and explain to him that you have different goals. If he really wants to see you happy, he shouldn't be pissed at all in either case. Instead you may never know what different opportunity this conversation will bring if you know what you really want.

like

I don't want to agree with SA1 but I would have to agree. If you want to start your own company, it would be a different story.
If you just want to join a start up, 2 years of experience may put you in a bad spot. My buddy left pwc as a manager and he doesn't have trouble finding a c level job at start ups

like

But that is about the furthest thing from what I want to do. Do I use the interview to say I want to do what I want, just take the job and keep looking and piss off my buddy, or just don't take the job because I know I won't like it. I'm 25, 2 years experience, and want to escape finance land (was FS at pwc)

Take the job, get a few years' experience in industry. It'll give you so much mileage and leverage when you do make the jump to startup. It's ok to sit back, relax, save some money for a while. As someone who is doing the reverse, bank to consulting and then hopefully launching a startup, I think you'll be very happy you did if you take the bank job. Adds so much credibility to your resume. Plus... When you do get to the startup, you'll have a much easier time getting funding if you understand the bank side of the business. Doesn't matter what role you're playing. Compliance in particular should give you exposure to the full credit process. Even if you only put in one year, I'd do it. Best of luck!

I was at the same point two years ago. I realized that the cost of servicing my school loans would wipe out my startup income, so I opted to do consulting for a while and pay off the loans. Along the way, I learned everything I could about organizational management, sales, market research, customer management, operations, setting up and leading teams... Etc. Now I'm almost done with my loans, and along with the financial freedom, I feel much more prepared to be a good all-around member of a startup team.... So I guess my advice is: think long term. If you aren't going into a startup immediately, have a good reason (like loans), and use whatever that next job is to address that reason, and make sure it checks multiple boxes for you. Gluck!

When do I begin adjusting? It’s been 4 months. I joined as an associate and I feel like sometimes my work is sloppy or I’m overwhelmed. I’ve gotten feedback that I’m making progress but that sounds fake. I’ve also gotten feedback that my work is sometimes sloppy. The last report I helped write had a ton of write ups on it. Feels like I’m about to get fired.

Hello everyone!

Currently looking to jump from Health Care to Pharma/Biotech. Does anyone work at Gilead and can serve as a reference? The current department I’m in, I do not fit the culture as it is a very archaic way of “managing” people. I have about a decade of a variety of work experience, majority in customer service/coordination/administration.

Would love any assistance if possible!

So i have been fortunate that i have managed to go through my career without the need for a degree. I was lucky enough to have been hired by one of the worlds top consulting firms, worked with a whole lot of big clients and travelled a lot. It's gotten to the point where I am not even asked about the lack of a degree on my resume. Personally though, it bothers me. I have a whole bunch of certifications in my industry…but just no formal degree. (cont'd)
