How early is too early to ask for a raise?
What is a good salary for a director in NY?
Im not searching for a new job but an acquaintance reached out about a similar role at a similar energy company.Turns out 2 ppl threw my name in the hat. I looked into it and the position was posted 2 weeks ago.Their director wants to meet.I bet pay is one of the first things to be discussed so that no one’s time is wasted.Am I crazy for not wanting to entertain it for less than 20-25% base pay increase? Is it selfish to ask for more? I’m sure most salary conversations end in negotiation anyways?

What happened that the scope got reduced so much they reduced it a level?
That’s exactly what I’m trying to understand. When I was presented with the initial offer, I engaged in a typical counter offer and negotiation process. The scope of the job itself remained unchanged. The recruiter mentioned that they would have presented a different scope with responsibilities that aligned more closely with those of a director level position. However, the initial offer I received was within the salary range that was presented on the first day, which was between $160,000 and $230,000 in total compensation.
I don’t want you to make some decision you may regret. However, last time when a company decided to do that, I walked. I didn’t regret.
Genuinely wish you good luck!
Appreciate you sharing that. I’m not too happy with how this was handled and at this point I don’t think accepting sets me up for success at this company, money aside
That’s crazy. Usually it should up level rather than down, yes curious what happened.
Agreed on the bait and switch. That’s honestly what’s giving me pause. After several months of alignment, a shift like this doesn’t feel like it sets up a strong foundation to start from. It’s less about how badly I need a job and more about whether the role is positioned in a way that actually sets both sides up for success. Right now, it feels pretty misaligned with how it was originally framed.
Interesting, why are you stuck on this role, with this company specifically?
I’d counter it with “Thank you for letting me know, Internal re-alignment discussions aside, is the role and scope changing as well? If scope of responsibilities is no longer aligned with growth of a leader, and was relegated to managing others, kindly confirm, as it does not reflects original posting nor my potential to contribute all I can with the company.”
Appreciate this perspective. I like how you positioned it. It made me realize the bigger question is whether the role still aligns with the level of impact I’m aiming for and right now it doesn’t feel like it does.
