Received verbal offer for position that I’m considering. Assuming I accept, recruiter advised not to give notice until after clearing background check. I have nothing that would come back on that check, any reason to wait for it to clear? I’d rather give notice before so that I’m giving myself more time off in between jobs... Thoughts?

Yes, wait. You shouldn't have any problems, but do not walk away from your existing job until your new one is in the bag. Only possible exception is if you have significant savings and are okay with a small risk that something doesn't work out.

like

I do have enough saved and was considering just quitting my job altogether because I hate it in May if nothing worked out.

Not saying it’s likely, but you don’t have an offer till you have an offer. If they want to pull the offer after your background check comes back because they decide your credit score is too low at below 800, they can. It’s all at will anyway so nothing means anything but at least a firm written offer is something.

like

Completely agree. I’ve seen a last minute submission from a great candidate and they halt everything and see where it goes with the new submission.

Why not just give a longer notice period? It’s not like you have to work super hard once you’ve transitioned your work to other folks. Definitely agree with the others that there’s no point risking unemployment just to take a little longer of a break. If that’s important to you, you should negotiate a later start date.

like

Fair enough. But I would question whether there is any value to preserving the relationship, if that’s how you were treated in the very end. Maybe it is still worth trying to keep the bridge from being burnt, but they certainly started the fire.

If I were you in that situation, I would have just put out the bare minimum and dragged my feet every step of the way on new work. But I also would never think to list someone who treated me that poorly as a reference.

I also recognize that people feel differently about this and will view my stance as an overreaction, but I think doing that is one of the most egregious ways that an employer can abuse its employee (in an industry where abusing associates is basically the norm).

I also realize after the fact that my recommendation for giving a longer notice period doesn’t really work for OP... oops.

Never give notice till it’s all said and done!

like

Wait. DO NOT announce anything until you’re given the all clear

like

Take the recruiter’s advice. She/he gave it for a reason.

like

I’ve seen offers rescinded and random conflicts pop up. Wait til that letter is signed!

like

I waited. I had no reason to think there would be any issues, but I wasn’t willing to risk it.

I received a verbal offer today too....

If you have a clean background check and want time off in between jobs, I think it’s fine. I personally wouldn’t feel comfortable telling people until it was 100% a done deal - and I didn’t when I was in your shoes. But it’s whatever you’re comfortable with!

I gave notice after the offer letter was signed but before background was complete. I have no skeletons and felt there was no real risk at that point.

Why not ask for a later start date at the new job?

How long do you want?

Get it in writing. I have been burned even as to the feds on such points.

Need advice & perspectives: I got a verbal review from my manager saying he couldn’t see me as senior cuz I didn’t follow the design doc format he mandates from all designers. While I have been the only designer who does almost everything from design, UI asset creation, wiring up UI in Unity (I am in mobile gaming).
Also the product I’m on has been in MVP stage, things move extremely fast and design decisions changed constantly. He’s not on my team.
Am I crazy for thinking him a bad manager?

Have an interesting scenario. Holiday party season is approaching. At one of our parties (during working hours) there is an optional “talent show.” Employees can win door prizes. We have an entry that is a religious song - like one you would sing in church. I assume we need to let this employee perform this - or we are setting ourselves up for trouble. Likewise, if we permit this song, I assume we cannot compel attendance to the talent show. The talent show is part of a lunch thing.

Need a sanity check here.

When I joined my current company, we were on a quarterly bonus structure with guaranteed payouts each quarter. This was, in fact, how the recruiter said he could meet my salary request.

The company just announced we are moving to annual payouts only, with no payments for 2023 until May 2024. There are no raises happening.

This amounts to 12% less money in my pocket in 2023 plus inflation.

Is this standard, or should I be looking for opportunities elsewhere?
