Yikes, that’s scary! Thanks for sharing this—I’m definitely more cautious now about applying to positions that seem too good to be true. It’s wild how these scams are getting more creative. I’m glad the BBB is aware, but we all need to stay vigilant about scams these days. I don't respond to any numbers I don't know on my phone or through texting.
I experienced this last week I had applied to a position in which had done twice with the two email accounts I use. Both emails were the same and asked to download " signal" messenger to " interview immediately." With Marissa Callaway for a $30.41 an hr position At this time I had received the emails early in the 4 o'clock hr and the other was well into after work hours. I am not going to lie I had taken the bait while in the back of my mind . I know this was a scam. I had messaged the number given with a simple "hello" and this is the exact response copied from the message
Hello! I hope you're having a great day.
I understand that you're about to begin the job briefing and interview. As we move forward, you'll learn more about the position. Please note that the briefing and interview will be conducted via instant messaging. Is that alright with you?
Once I read ^^ that I did not reply. Beware
We all know this is no way to conduct an interview. If so it would be via meets right?
Sounds like the same people. I'm sorry that happened to you.
Oh wow. Thank you for informing us. Im currently in the job search market and definitely appreciate this notice
Indeed and Glassdoor needs to take more responsibility for the postings that they are accepting.
This just happened to me for a Remote job dexus and they fedex a check for me to purchase equipment but the check was from the cancer support community I called the aarp fraud dept and was told the checks were stolen please be careful.
This happened to me, a while ago. Shortly thereafter, I got notification that my email was on the dark web. A lot of times, those links contain malware that installs on your phone. Most of us have banking apps and other sensitive information on our phones.
Be very careful and trust your gut. You were wise to cut them off.
Ugh there really are so many scam postings out there but I am glad people are making them known so scammers dont' get away with this kind of stuff. Its so sad that they are preying on people who are desperate to find a new role.
I had one of these too. They wanted a lot of information, including my DL without even talking to me. You think these sites would do a little more vetting.
Thank you for the information!
Thanks for Sharing
Thank you for the cautionary tales. Unfortunately, there are way too many predators out there.
I have experienced scammers also via all those websites you have mentioned. I now have to go the extra mile to check out the potential jobs. I check their company websites to see if the jobs are listed on it, employee reviews to see what's being said or not, and sometimes if possible to see if the recruiter is listed as a employee. On LinkedIn it's a little difficult to send a direct message without paying a fee for the level with LinkedIn. It's a shame this is happening to people looking for a job. One of a immediate red flag for me is when they ask you by phone to give them my social security number & date of birth. I tell them directly you are not getting that information until at the point it's necessary during the hiring process. Really!! I had FAKE Staffing Agency go as far as saying I was hired after not being able to participate in a second interview with the company I was supposed to be working for. I even looked up the location for the company that had locations in multiple states except the state I was supposed to work for State location via Remote. They just refuse to allow to me talk with the company with no good reasons. I know from working for staffing agencies you always have the second interview with the company you supposed to work for.
Yes, this is a very common scam right now. Big red flags: unsolicited texts after applying, mismatched company names, links to “forms,” and requests for ID over text. Legit recruiters won’t ask for a driver’s license outside a secure onboarding process after a verified offer.
Good call refusing and reporting it.
And importantly: If you’ve lost money to an internet scam, don’t stay silent , report it immediately. In some cases, funds can still be traced or recovered, and reporting helps stop others from being targeted.
