I moved from Bain because I wanted to move geographies. Biggest mistake.
On your point, totally should do it. I am planning it again.
Moved post MBA.
Well, if the toxic partner group means you won’t be supported to advance then maybe your just running away from the forest fire? Hoping on another lawn could mean greener grass, could mean brown grass, or it could also be on fire.
Balance of probabilities though indicates if it can’t get worse then the expected value is better, provided it exceeds switching costs.
Probably possible - best bet is connecting with people in the firm who know you from undergrad/b-school who can float your name to the recruiting team so when the time comes, you can try. Helps to have a few partners who can vouch for you as well.
For additional context - am a top performer so less of a transition problem.
There are also toxic partners at Bain ;-)
Curious as well about such situations. Are lateral moves worth it? Everyone tells me that moving lateral is like losing a year or two. But right now I’m really craving for a change more than anything. Is lateral on title and only slight increase in TC worth moving for?
Can you defect to different partners at your current firm? Seems like that might be easier. I’m in the midst of that myself. Not -easy- but easier I think.
Can you expand on toxic partner group? Always curious about drivers of B->B switch.
Biggest pieces are - 1) team loves to boil the ocean and sign up for everything (we don’t work smart at all), 2) No room to push back, 3) Don’t really work toward an overall goal - just move toward the flavor of the day, 4) Often schedule meetings on the weekends, 5) 75-85 hour weeks are the norm not the exception
I recognize that these may not necessarily be representative of BCG at large but has been my experience so far. Looking for a fresh start and worried about the internal politics/retaliation on reviews of trying to navigate away from this internally
Curious to hear more about toxic partner group. What are the negatives? Conversely, any positives?
